As there is no large shoulder hump I'd say it's a black bear. Best way to tell is side profile of the face.

Ok, so brown bears all have a hump? These ones also had a flat face.

Flat face means black bear too. Dished face is brown bear.

Brown bears have big shoulder muscles for digging which makes a big hump on their shoulder.

Yeah. So are there three types of brown bears, regular, griz and Kodiak?

    A bunch of Brown sub-species, but in MT/WY/ID a brown = griz.

The brown bear has lost 98% of its habitat in the lower 48 states. About 95% of the brown bear population in the United States is in Alaska, though in the lower 48 states, they are repopulating gradually but steadily along the Rockiesand the western Great Plains.[145][146] The Alaskan population is estimated at 32,000 individuals.[147] The largest populations of brown bears in the lower 48 states are found in the 23,300-km2 Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the 24,800-km2 Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem.[148] The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem of northwest Wyoming is estimated to hold about 674–839 grizzly bears, followed slightly the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem of northwest Montana with about 765 animals, the Cabinet-Yaak Ecosystem of northwest Montana and northeast Idaho with about 42-65 bears of the species, the Selkirk Ecosystem of northeast Washington and northwest Idaho with only about 40–50 animals and even less the North Cascades Ecosystem of northcentral Washington with about 5–10 grizzlies.[149][150][151][152] These five ecosystems combine for a total of a maximum 1,729 wild grizzlies still persisting in the contiguous United States.

    all griz around here.

Population has bounced back a lot though in the last decade. The feds are turning over control of their population control to states soon and being delisted. They are pushing out of the GYE and heading into surrounding areas. They closed the heart mountain access area due to high bear presence this year.

been a hot topic around here about opening a small trophy hunting season for them.

That's a black bear. Thin, pointy ears. Cone shaped nose. No hump at the shoulder.
Blacks tend to have a downward slope from their shoulders to their hips, too.
Grizzly would have round, fat, "teddy bear" ears, fat face with a shorter snout, hump at the shoulders and equal height at the shoulders and hips.
And footprints...grizzly front toes are in a straighter line - you can draw a line between the bottom of the first and last toe without intersecting the foot pad. Blacks have more of an arc to their toes.

i'm one of those weirdos that's super into conservation and being a dirtbag hippie....but also love guns, sport hunting, and god damn right if i was wealthy enough to swing the trips - i'd have most big African trophy game mounted in my estate...

Just a bunch of voices yelling at eachother in the conference room that is my cognition

well considering most of conservation funding comes from hunter and hunting..it makes sense. haha

The good news is the Bears have bounced back very well. So time to figure out how to control the population will still conserving them.

amen to that. imo if both parties (the hippies and the hunters) were more educated about the "other-side's" viewpoints, then a lot more productive conservation and control efforts could be implemented.
