I've read that the Lexus gs350 with the exact same engine that is in the Tacoma has 311hp/280tq. The only difference is tuning so we can run low grade gas. Do y'all think we will have a tuner in the future that will let us do that and if so, who do you think will be the best?

Well that sucks because I'm really starting to regret buying this truck.

The constant dropping from 5 to 4 drives me nuts! I don't use 6th, its worthless.

I like everything about it except interstate driving and that's 75% of my driving. Why can't Toyota get their shit together on the Tacoma powertrain??????

I think there is plenty of power in this motor, but when the transmission wants to go from first to sixth gear as fast as possible, it feels underpowered.

ECT does nothing for interstate. But I couldn't agree more, if I was concerned about mpg's I wouldn't buy a damn truck!!!

I'm guessing cam profiles are different and the tune simply takes advantage of that.

So I did some research, it actually only took 13 mins too. Engines are the same. It's all about dat tune.

the GS does rev 400rpm higher, but I dont think thats significant. I think the GS's intake and exhaust probably play a role too in getting that 311hp figure. But it's all high end power.

Does anyone think that Toyota would grant us the Lexus tune if we wanted it? I could see warranty issues coming up from their end but since it's the same engine, why would it matter? I'm happy with the way the truck is currently, but if they offered the Lexus tune for the 91/93 octane fuel I would probably take it. I don't see the 6 speed transmission causing any issues, but then again I'm also not a auto engineer.

Everyone is complaining about the torque and sluggish feeling down low as is... Putting a cars high revving top end performance tune on a truck will just further the issues.

    Loud as hell URD exhaust!
What about re-gearing? It might make 6th a more useable gear.

I believe gearing would make a difference on the low end, but you will suffer MPG on the highway.

My 6speed Manual transmission truck has the 4.3 gears in it and I feel the truck is decent low end, but I'm flirting with 3k+ rpms at 80mph

This. I love the 430 gears in my manual. Rpms don't really scare me personally. I have started running premium fuel as well, it seems to take some of the low end surging away. In my opinion, with how tall the auto's 6th gear is, the 4.30's would be a perfect match for it as well.

Agreed. I do think for the MT there isn't much a difference between 5 and 6 (driving wise) Since 5 and 6 are both over drive gears I think they could of left 6 a tad taller and given us a FEW less RPMS at 80 just for the MPG argument.

I am content with the steady 18-19 mpg I get mixed though.

Try running premium for a couple tanks and see if you agree with me that it makes the engine way smoother accelerating. I'm on tank 2 and unless the placebo effect has got me, I believe the engine response and acceleration have improved dramatically.

I know this isn't the correct place for it but since talking about tuning . The 4.0 tacoma and the 3.5 engines gas wise isn't that much of a difference but also there is. The 4.0 4runner horsepower is 270 tacoma 4.0 236 now if Toyota could of tuned the Tacoma same way as the 4runner I would of loved it. And add the supercharger also sweet
