I'm looking at purchasing a 2024 Tacoma equipped with the turbo charged 4 cylinder with the 8 spd. automatic. I did a vin search and found that it has the towing package and has a towing capacity of 6400 lbs. I will be periodically pulling our boat that weighs just over 5000#. Will this turbo 4 cylinder be as adept at pulling the boat as our Gen III Tacoma with the V-6 with the 6 sp. automatic? Our present Tacoma pulls our boat with relative ease but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew with the new truck with the 4 cylinder engine.

In every possible metric except maybe reliability the turbo 4 will completely dominate your current engine.

The power out of this L4 turbo engine is amazing, almost like a diesel type torque

Doubt. A turboed gasser is an improvement over NA, but it's not on par with diesel.

The current Taco engine produces 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque in the non-base non-hybrid format. The little 3.0 duramax puts out 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Then compare that to what most people think of when you say "diesel torque" from something like a 5.9 cummins at 305–325 horsepower and 600–650 lb-ft of torque or a 6.0 Powerstroke pushing 325 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque.

The turbo Taco is great for what it is, but saying it is "diesel type" is hyperbolic nonsense.

Yes, but a 4 cyl Cummins 4BT only has 265 ft lbs. what most people mean is the torque curve is diesel like.

Never heard of that one. Googled it. That engine is older than me, and has been updated to still have more TQ than the current Taco.

Don't misunderstand me, the Taco's new powertrain is a great improvement. I like it on paper, and if it proves reliable as the previous gens, it'll be an epic set up. It's still not near a diesel.

Pretty sure when someone says it is diesel like it is referring to the curve, not total output. Torque peak @1700RPM is very diesel like.

When you got those diesel numbers was it full size or a midsize truck diesel?

dosent make much sense to compare full size diesel torque to a midsize truck.

iforce max tundra makes 583ftlb so it would be full size diesel level. The current 4d4 in the Hilux 343 ftlb torque so the new Tacoma would be on that level as well

Comparing a gas engine and diesel doesn’t belong. In your shoes OP, I’d base my need on how much towing, how long, often as well as capabilities. I picked up an older full size Tundra as a work horse to handle my heavier, harder, longer needs as I picked up a new toy that required it. Could my 2nd gen do it, yes but not comfortably. Jury is out on this setup still w/ new gen in some minor ways. Just my 2 cents.

A full size diesel (not one of the mini diesels in a 1/2 ton) is still far above a Tundra iforce max to the tune of 300+ ft/lbs.

True but that’s not comparing things that are simmilar class. I’m sure Toyota could come up with some sort of v8 turbo that would be equals to that if they wanted. Like a full size non half ton. I’m talking about 1/2ton diesel and midsize diesel
