Matching displacement, turbodiesel will always win on torque. Turbo gas can usually have higher HP, but not torque on a properly engineered diesel. Even the old Cummins you drug up was capable of 100+ more ft lbs. There's a reason high torque applications are always diesel. Think excavators, loaders, semis, etc. If gas could do it better they'd use it.

The import part is not whether it will pull it.
    But can you stop it?

Make sure the trailer brakes work. And you will be fine.

I personally like the looks of the 3rd gen better but the 4th gen outperforms in every possible way. A squirrel!!

This new powertrain is heads above the gen 3 Tacoma.

The 3rd gen has its dna based on the 2005 tacoma early 2nd gen…… it’s time to accept reality people and move on, yes it’s a huge change but for the better even with the issues popping up with the 4th gen. It will all be ironed out eventually, let’s face it it’s Toyotas first new Tacoma in 20 years from the ground up

All I can think of with that comment is more doubt - doubting you've actually used the 4th gen Tacoma powertrain. My experience with past Toyota V6 and 6 speed automatic or 5 speed manual is my '24 TRD OR leaves them screaming in pain when all it does is drop from 8th to 7th for a bit while climbing. Additionally the new powertrain with the option to have a 6'2" bed over the 5.5 beds many full size have is a really big advantage. I've kept my smiles or laughing inside when both of my minivan and the new Tacoma have been able to do things associates' full-sized pickups could not.

If I was all about regular towing a lot I'd get something different. Now about 5 months and 5000 I consider the gen 4 long beds a wonderful option for someone who's work oriented not wanting something huge. With other pickups experience the 4th gen is also superior for being quiet and well mannered driving for something really good doing work off road.

I am still confident that it is going to be a great engine in terms of reliability……just don’t do 10k OCIs.

The 3G Tundra isn't pulling like a diesel displacement still wins when it's turbo charged. Ford makes a high out put version of the 7.3 power stroke. Take a wreker with the normal 7.3 pick up that t4 Tacoma with the boat hitched to it and pull it down the road. The truck and trailer are going to move as easy as just the boat would hooked to the Tacoma.

I sold my 2016 Tundra Limited 4X4 and my 2012 Tacoma Sr5 4x4 to get this new truck and I like it better than both by far. I find this 2024 more like my last Tundra than Tacoma.

If we're going to argue about whether the T24A makes diesel like torque, we should probably make a fair comparison.

The 2.8 in the Hilux makes 550NM, which is equal to about 405 lb/ft. If you adjust that for the difference in displacement, it would come to about 347 LB/FT as a 2.4 liter, which is within 10% of the T24A's rated output. So, I would say that is pretty comparable.

Although, as mentioned several times already, I think the initial comment was referring to the torque curve more than the actual output.

Yes exactly, peak torque at 1700 rpm is impressive . These trucks can climb a mountain and keep my rpm’s ridiculously low

You gotta love these arguments on here:

Person 1: the Tacoma has tons of low end torque, like a diesel
Person 2 (and others): Bullshit! My F350 with three times the displacement will out-pull it any day of the week!

Torque is pretty similar to the 2.8L that came in the Colorado for a few years, while horsepower and 0-60 is way better. I'd say it's a perfect diesel alternative at this weight class.

And, so far we are just talking non-hybrid numbers. With the hybrid, it's similar to full size numbers from recent generations (particularly the smaller V8 options). Won't pull the same through the whole rev range, but will work well by having more gears.

Kinda silly to whoever throws out ford power stroke numbers to compare to a small displacement turbo 4 gasser… that’s already been established.

As the new owner (600 miles so far) of a 4th gen (6 speed manual) and someone who has spent the past 300,000 miles in a 2015 (auto trans) and just rented a 2022 3rd gen taco for work last week… I feel like I’m in a pretty good position to comment on the differences. Obviously wasn’t towing with them back to back… and I think all of us would agree that there has never been a Tacoma aimed at serious towing… I mean, I’ve towed with my 2015 enough, but it ain’t fun. That being said, this 4th gen is my first manual trans Tacoma so the whole experience is different. I’ve never driven a 2nd or 3rd gen manual and I’d like to. 3rd gen felt smooth and strong off the line to me. My old 2nd gen was no slouch either and I think most of the difference comes down to the transmissions? 3rd gen motor was noticeably smoother to me and liked to rev. Both 2nd and 3rd gen don’t have much on tap when you’re doing 70-75 and encounter a grade. All I can say is the 4th gen is a whole different ballgame in that respect… 70-75 and there’s a grade or you just need to scoot around someone… that boost comes online and it just moves out. Haven’t driven the 4th gen with an 8 speed and I’d be curious about that and how it translates… lots of metrics to consider. I’m really impressed though- and for comparison my 2nd gen is on 265’s, the 3rd gen I drove was on stock sized rubber and my 4th gen is on 285’s. Biggest tires and feels the most powerful by a fair margin. Also getting pretty decent mileage, around 19mpg combined.

Me too. It turns a heck of a lot slower at 65 than my old 3rd gen. That's less wear.

And the GM 2.7 4 cylinder makes
    310 HP & 430 TQ in a 4 cylinder!

And I still wouldn’t want one.

That Cruze engine told me all I want to know about GM small turbo engine.

I’ll take moderate HP and TQ for more reliable.

And the older I get, I appreciate the ability to get to things and be able to work on them.

    Small engine bay sucks.
