Some damn good posts on this thread! Many props going to Chris as always lol

I was going to get my lift kit first. But ever since I got smoked off the line at a redlight ( by a chrysler 300 I think) I'm getting the S/C first. I'm so ashamed!

Now to decide between the TRD or the URD. IDK I got to look more in to it. Good luck to the OP on savin up the cash. I'm in the same boat. should be a couple of months. :yay::burnrubber:

Yup! pretty expensive though. But my experience with URD so far has been great. That still doesn't change the price. lol They do offer discounts and work with you as much as possible. I get a military discount.:D IDK how much better the rotex is than TRD's though. Still slowly lookin into it.

If you want to be fast off the line then you want to go TRD. Same if you want that massive amount of low end torque.

Yeah? I'm still unsure about it. I'm always wanting the best. URD seems to win there but I also won't be using my truck on the track. Street n offroad. So, still pretty torn. If TRD does seem to be the best street option and I can get as long of a life out of it as URD. Then with that and the price difference it'll be TRD FTW fo sho!

Its hard to say which kit is the "best". Each kit has its pros/cons.

For me, the TRD is a better choice then the URD. Plus I'm not a fan of centrifugal s/c. Positive displacement FTW!

well i was thinking about doing this along time ago and saving for it. i was trying to make the same decision and i realized that.

    1. you can get much more power out of a turbo and tune it to the way you like it.

    2. when i was looking around no one had a kit for the 2nd gen 4 cily tacos it would most likely have to be a custom build.

    3. that could be more expensive or even less expensive than a S/C kit.

    4. the S/C will give you lower end power but not much higher end.

    5. i think S/C sounds alot cooler haha

    6. last one i promise if you can figure out how to put a twin turbo in that 4 banger you would be an effin rocket! and get rid of that turbo lag have one spool up at the low end and have the other kick in right after the first one :D

but its a hard decision hope it works out for you!

Turbo if you have the money, blood, sweat and tears to put into it.

I had a 2003 Lexus IS300. I ran the pro lex performace super charger kit. I installed it myself and went through a lot with it. I also had a lot of friends running turbo kits from several different places--From the basic SRT kit to guys who were running full GTE block swaps making 700hp+. Here is the very basic break down from my experiences.

Turbos make more power with little to no parasitic losses. A super charger uses a belt and engine power to drive the compressor. A turbo uses waste exhaust gasses. At 7 PSI I dynoed at 305 RWHP on my IS. This was with a bigger injector setup and very very expensive tuning. The turbo kits running the same amount of boost were making about the same, But if you examine the torque curve you see that I was making about 265 lb/ft while the turbo guys were making over 300 lb/ft. The other benefit of turbo is that once you get into boost and the turbo is spooled up you make close to your max power till red line. With a super charger you build slowly. the amount of boost is dependent on the RPMs of the engine. So you really only make your max HP/TQ at redline. The other benefit to turbo is the ability to adjust the boost on the fly. This means you can run a mild tune at 7psi for daily driving and hit a button and be at 14psi when needed. The benefits of a supercharger is that you have the benefits off the line. as soon as you step on the gas and the engine revs you have boost. No turbo lag. The main reason to go with super charger for the tacoma is because of the availability of kits. The TRD kit was designed specifically by the Toyota for the engine and with proper installation can be fairly problem free. Where as with turbos, even ones designed for the car, can require a lot more work. I generally tell people who plan to take on a N/A - T conversion to set aside $2-4K more than they budget for misc things and problems. Plan on fitment issues, fuel system issues, ECU problems, and money for a reputable tuner. There are a lot of hack tuners out there that even others think are good. I had mine tuned by 2 different "good" tuners and still was running like shit. I finally took the car to a guy who tuned ferraris and built Nobles and Audi rally cars. Watching him was great. You could tell immediately the difference between a his abilities and the others. Getting a turbo setup running right will be a ton of work and money, but once running right, with the right transmission mods it will blow the doors off the SCs.

    my $0.02

PS: Believe me, if I had an XR and didn't live in the smog nazi state I would be running a turbo by next year.

for the price of the toyota supercharger and the power (or lack there of) that it makes it not worth it. I vote turbo all the way, best dollar per horse/ torque your going to find. For the price of the oem supercharger you can have someone built you custom headers, uppipe, downpipe, turbo manifold, hook up a intercooler and tap everything for oil coolant. And you will see wayyy more power

This is all coming from a wrx guy btw

Well the TRD SC kit comes with a good amount for the price.
-supercharger, intercooler (Low Temp Radiator), intercooler pump, fuel injectors, fuel pump, spark plugs, tensioner, and all the nuts, bolts, pulleys, belts, brackets, hoses, spacers. Even some fancy stickers to show off! And all warrantied in case it blows itself up. Most kits I've looked at for others cars cost about the same for just the basic charger and bolts to install it.
