So then is there a way to source 2nd gen fluid to put in a 3rd gen? See if it makes a difference?

As an aside I think this really really needs posting in the dedicated diff whine thread because it might have some weight behind it. Playing around with fluids is cheap & easy, relatively speaking. If we can find that it's just a friction modifier (or lack thereof) in the diff oil we can put the howl issue to bed. If it's not, no harm done and everyone is only collectively out a few quarts of gear oil.

It wouldn't explain some of the random failures but it's a start, as my only other guess would be a pinion issue- I've noted that it seems like 4.3 geared folks have no whine, while 3.9's do- ring gear is the same, pinion is different.

The late 2nd Gen uses the same gear oil as 3rd Gen

I have a 4.3 and definitely have the whine (currently at 10k miles but it started at like 2000 miles); I think a lot less folks have manuals in general so there are less data points to pull. I'm changing the diff fluid in a few weekends (Amsoil severe gear 75-90). I'm hoping that helps somewhat. Though Toyota's brochures are unclear, I'm relatively certain I don't have a true limited slip so I won't be adding the additive for it.

Additive is only required if your limited slip diff has clutches like positrac etc. Basically a spring keeps pressure on the clutch disks and the additive is there to allow smooth slipping and not lurching and grabbing hard resulting in chatter when turning.

I have a 2017 TD OR, considering getting the TSB but I'm not sure I really need to. Did you trade in your 2016 for a 2017? And you didn't need to do anything for the 2017?

Same here. When is the TSB due? I'm at 1100 miles on my 2017 TRD OR.
