Another zero day . Worked 2 different birds . Both wanted me to go to them

 

Crazy windy . Had a nice long beard just out of range this morning . Spotted 4 birds out in a field up to their waddles in tall grass . So funny . They would lay down and disappear . So I did a big horseshoe to the other side of them , set up 25 yards from the edge of field in the woods and yelped on a friction call and waited . About a half hour went by and no response so I stood up to sneak to the edge for a peak . Holy crap 15 yards to my right 2 birds are fighting . They didn’t see me move because it was so windy . The one I shot turned out to be a Jake . They were probably all Jakes it happened quick . First turkey I shot while I was standing up 5” beard . Nubs for spurs

Thanks guys ,it’s been a tough season so far !

 

Took today off . Rained most of the morning anyway . Watched 6 male birds (730-8am) from my living room window cross the field at an angle and head for the patch of woods where I killed the bird yesterday.That’s where I will be tomorrow morning grass in the fields is high and wet .

 

@lynyrd3 not seein a lot but this guy is sure nice looking

 

I can't tell for sure but it looks like he has a double beard.

 

Hmm might be, I didnt get to look at him too long. My game cam may have better pic, can see it on tree.

 

I was outsmarted again this morning. I knew where he was going but tried to ambush him in between the roost and the field he was headed to . Tomorrow I will be set up on the edge of the field with a lone hen decoy

 

And he flew right over top of me yesterday across the road on to other property.

 

Well the season goes until the last day of May but I’m done and I think the turkeys are also . No gobbling at all except very little on the roost . One Jake for me those birds beat me up this year .

 

My son and I got 3 day license in Idaho. My kid missed the biggest bird I have ever called in. Merriam are notorious for circling behind you. This one had 3 roads he could have come in on and given us a decent shot on all three. Nope he drops off the edge into some super thick buck brush and comes in behind us. My son took a shot at 30 yards left handed unfortunately he missed fortunately it was a clean miss. Still pretty hard on a 15 year old to miss one like that. I guess that's why he is the biggest bird I have ever called in. It was pretty cool though we spotted him on a road over a mile away and got on him, I bet he gobbled 40 times as he came in.

 

I added it up last night from info off my garmin watch. 196 miles hiked and 23000 feet in elevation gained this season. Weather permitting we might get one more trip.
