I don't know about using a trap gun because of the wide pattern. For turkeys you want a tighter pattern hence the choke (tighter than full). As for necessary equiptment: full camo from head to toe including face netting and gloves, a couple of turkey calls (mouth reed, friction, & or box), a pocket knife, and maybe a turkey vest if your going to get serious(one with a cusion to set on). Your cousin may have all the calls you will need but I like to carry my own anyway. By the way my turkey gun in a Remington 870 Supermag.

Yea, i know the gun is not optimal. My dad is giving me his, as he doesnt use it. The only other guns I have are a rifle and a Mossberg 500 home defense with a 18" shorty barrel which is no way fit for turkey hunting.

I think sighting this gun in, and trying different turkey loads will prob be best to start right?

    I've lost count....

Depending on how your Mossberg 500 home defense is set up, it could actually be easily turned into a good turkey gun. If the barrel has an accu-choke system (the one where you can screw in different chokes at the end of the barrel) all you need is to get a traditional stock and a super-full turkey choke for it and it will work great in the woods.

awesome!! Make sure and check out the Double Bull's, Primos bought them out but they are still great blinds.
no no no!!!! turn around now and run like crazy!!! It's an addiction you'll never escape from..............LOL

remember, those boogers can see many times better than us. If I can't get the bottom of my boots camo'd, I'll at least hide them in leaves when I sit down. Little things like that can make or break the deal.

If your buying new camo, get the leafy wear gear. Very good for spring turkey hunting when the leaves are opening up.

And like hillbilly said, you really need a turkey extra full choke out front. I've never needed to take a long shot, but I'm ready just in case.

Yeah, bought my KY license about 2 wks ago. I go to church with a guy whos family own a couple hundred arces in Pike Co. so he's going to hook me up. There season opens up about 10 dys before the WV season does. In KY you can hunt from dawn til dusk, in WV you have to be out of the mtns at 1:00pm. I was talking to my turkey hunting buddy here in WV and he said if he got his KY license we could hunt the morning over here (WV) and cross the river in a john boat and hunt over there(KY) in the evening.

two things I'm very proud that Indiana does......youth hunts, and the apprentice licenses........I can't wait to get out there with my twins......this is info from my DNR e-mails.....

Indiana youth turkey season, April 17 & 18
Indiana's 2010 youth turkey season takes place April 17 and 18. The special season is open to hunters age 17 or younger. Youth hunters are limited to one bearded or male wild turkey.
To participate, a youth hunter must be accompanied in the field at all times by an adult who is at least 18 years old and is not in possession of a firearm, bow and arrow, or crossbow. The adult does not need a hunting license, unless the youth is using an apprentice license. The youth must be properly licensed to take a wild turkey and comply with all tagging and check-in requirements. A list of check stations is available in the 2008-2009 Hunting and Trapping Guide or at www.wildlife.IN.gov. Legal equipment includes 10-, 12-, 16-, or 20-gauge shotguns, bow and arrow, or crossbow.
An apprentice license is available to youths who have yet to complete the requirement of hunter education. All persons, regardless of age, are limited to three apprentice licenses in their lifetime.

Was mt biking near San Angelo last wknd and we rode up on one that was halfway up this cliff we stopped at. It was about 10-15 yrds away when we came to the edge of the cliff. Now this was a boulderstrewn cactus plantation sprinkled with mesquite trees and this big bad mf was down the cliff and out of danger range from us in no time. Somehow this sucker tiptoed through all that shit and was 100 yards away in no time. I've seen a few but was impressed on how big and nimble this bird was. He never flew just skidaddled on down and away from us then strutted on off into his turf all calm cool and collected. We watched him for awhile from up on high, nice show!
