I reckon a mall parking lot would be kinda off road, or for the hard core a dirt or gravel driveway.

    What hasn't been modified?
VSC has its own computer though?
If so all you have to do is connect the vsc wire from the 4wd computer to the vsc computer. Or why even connect it? Vsc dosent need to know 4wd exists

Just slap on some TRD Offroad 4x4 stickers? And many won’t even know the difference since they look OEM.

Absolutely it does. Wheel rotation comparison. Wheel sensors feed through ECU because of throttle control.
Look, the cheap easy way is to trade. Expensive and hard way is to convert. Two ways to do it hard... simple or complicated. I think there are shops out there that are good enough to replicate all current functions but to exactly copy Toyotas way would be a long $$$$$$$ project.

I was looking in to this a long while back when I had a 2WD, and like it was said on here, unless you're mechanically inclined, the labor is gonna kill you, plus pretty much completely screw any warranty you might have as they can outright state that anything that happens to your truck is due to 4WD aftermarket conversion.

That being said, off the top of my head here's what you'll need-

New 4x4 Transmission (2WD transmissions are longer to accommodate for no transfer case)
    Transfer Case
    New Driveshafts front and back
    Front axles
    Front Diff
    Mounts for diff
Spindles *should* be fine as 2WD spindles just have a dust cap inside that can be popped out and 4WD hub connected
    4WD hubs
Either go with a full conversion to make it as close to stock as possible and get a 4WD ECU/4WD switch in your dash and all that, OR I think Rock Solid Toys makes a harness to have a switch on your dash to activate your front diff. 4WD trucks have stuff built in that when you switch to 4WD it activates the Transfer case as well as a 4WD module on your front diff that engages both axles. Without that front module I think you're technically in 3WD lol. You might be able to work it out to have multiple switches to just engage the transfer case and all that, or go mechanical engagement from RST (FJ Trasnfer case conversion)and not have to bother with ECU and 4WD button, but thats a whole nother ballgame.

Again, unless you're doing it yourself, the conversion labor plus parts cost far outweighs any loss you might take on a trade in for a 4x4.

I don’t remember where but I heard of someone doing it in a 17 and from what I remember it ended up costing like $18,000 using all OEM parts

Mine came with 4X4 and never used it in almost 2 years. HAVE to remember to put it in 4X4 from time to time to move the gears.

I've had to use 4WD a dozen times today! Slick and snowy and I was at a job site off road this morning. I hate mud. Snowy mud.

I've seen a few SAS'ed 3rd gens...not sure if they started out as stock 4x4s but an SAS conversion might as well begin with a 4x2 as everything in the front drivetrain gets re-done basically.

    Best first post ever

I don't think I've ever seen a case where someone wanted to get rid of their 4x4 for a 2wd version of the same vehicle...not saying it hasn't happened, I'm sure it has..but definitely not common.
Though I know of one member on here that ditched his 4wd components to make it a 2wd for the sake of race truck, which is about the only valid excuse to do such a thing lol.

Why does it need to know you are in 4wd if it’s just sensing wheel speed? The hubs are the same except for the splined internals on the 4wd. I think you are over thinking this.

You are turning the front wheels into driven wheels. They can now spin (think snow)
