Turn media port into just charging.

Hi,

I feel like i saw what I am trying to do somewhere on here... but can't find it. Planning on a media port relocation. Have the parts I need for that (I Hope). was wondering If I can turn the existing port into just charging. maybe tap off the 12v port?

 

Why not add a charging port? Less of hassle than a "conversion/downgrade".

 

Just trying to keep the existing setup. I bought another cable to plug into the radio to accommodate the wireless CarPlay dongle

 

You can select for charge only on the smartphone settings.

 

Another option that would save you from modding the wiring - USB data blocker. This is the first one I found but Amazon sells a bunch of options for that.

I guess I'm not understanding what everyone is suggesting, or no one is understanding what I am trying to accomplish. I am going to take the existing media output, run a new cable and attach a wireless dongle for apple CarPlay. would like to use the port just as charger. is there a way to power that?

 

So, you are disconnecting the OEM data/charger of the Head Unit and adding an aftermarket USB connector-wire to a CarPlay dongle. Then Leaving the original usb port on the dash, then trying to get it to be a charger only by tapping into fused power?

I think they do sell a mating connector that matches the Head Unit.

I think the problem point will be turning the factory media port into a powered port. I suppose you could install some sort of aftermarket 12V to USB port behind the dash which you could then plug the factory port into after buying the correct Tacoma to USB adapter.

Not exactly what you asked for, but you might be able to come up with a result you like using the Scosche PowerVolt port - assuming you don’t care about the 12V cig outlet too much. I am using one of those, the USB-A port is for my wired CarPlay and the USB-C is for charging. I only suggest this because it would provide you the USB-C for charging, if charging is what you care about.

If using the factory port is more of what you care about, then my suggestion doesn’t help there. Need something to convert 12V to USB for the dash port to plug into once you unplug it from the radio.

I did what I think you're talking about with respect to installing a Car Play adapter behind the dash, leaving the USB data/charge port dead (more here).

It sounds like you want make that former charge/data port "live" for charging only? You've gotten sound advice, but I also wonder if you've considered either installing a USB charging adapter

like this one into the power port next to the USB port as @BLtheP suggested, OR using the USB ports in the armrest instead?

Ended up putting that USB switch from AOB in, Did an add a fuse. Left the OEM one in in case I don't keep the truck as long as I think I am going to and want to go back to OEM.

 

Actually looking at that photo, I think the add a fuse is suppose to go the other way.... Am I right?
