Turning off airbag before offroading?

So the guys that push it offroad may be paying out for servicing spent airbags? Luckily, I prefer to crawl offroad - bumping heads together on long dirt roads isn't any fun anyways. Thanks for the input!

I have dropped my truck(stock w/ 265’s) from the bottom of the tire onto the rock slider (BAMF) rolling off a ledge and the air bags did not deploy. It was a pretty big hit. I was surprised nothing happened.

 

Easy way to solve this issue. Just get a 3rd gen SR......it doesnt have those nanny sensors for the curtain airbags. SR FOR LIFE!

I would think the SR has the same exact Air Bags as the other models.

 

Air bags are the same, yes. But i found it somewhere a while back that the SR doesmt have the tip over angle sensors.

 

How would it know to pop the bags if it didnt have a sensor?

 

Thats not what I said at all. Geez. I said it doesnt have the tip over angle sensor for the side curtain airbags. I didnt say it had no sensors at all. Still has sensors for side impacts like every otger vehicle. You got to read, bud.

 

I had no idea it had no roll over sensors, good to know.

Are u sure you're not talking about the inclinometer? The one in the center Guage cluster?

 

Since I have an SR, I have no idea what you speak of. SR is Japanese for Basic Beetch model. I found the info a couple years ago, but had to type the perfect search and stumbled on it. THe info stated that because it's the SR model, its not really considered as part of the "offroad" lineup of tacos like the TRD and OR. Utility package is like dollar tree and SR is like Dollar GEneral. They really aren't that different. But anyways, what hte info was stating is that the more offroad oriented models (TRD, TRD PRO, OR) had tilt sensors for the upper side airbags that could deploy when sensing a rollover at certain speeds. But with the 3rd GEN they got rid of the RSCA switch that could disable the tilt sensors that was present in the 2nd gen trucks. The side curtain airbags across all models operate the same when involved with an impact, so the bags would still go off even on the SR in the event of a rollover due to there being an impact involved. But no tilt sensor to deploy the upper curtain air bags if say the truck went past a 30 degree list.

But there's also the speed factor. Pretty sure on the TRD, TRD PRO, etc, if you are under a certain speed that tilt sensor is auto disabled anyway. Same with if in 4x4, pretty sure that sensor is disabled across the board.

 

Having been in an off-road roll over, I’m not sure why you would want the air bags disabled.

 

Same, but in a rally car. Luckily we weren't going to fast. But the discussion to me seems more of people not wanting the airbags to go off just because the truck leaned a little further than the sensors would like, thus deploying the air bags when not actually needed. But like I mentioned earlier, the tilt sensors I'm almost positive are disabled under a certain speed. But even if you were under that speed, if you actually rolled over, that would involve an impact and the impact sensors would then deploy the side curtain airbags.
