I once was much more fearful of rattlers. For good or for bad I have seen 8 Western Diamondbacks, 2 Green Mojaves and a Sidewinder ... I maybe should be more fearful than "meh".

I cannot disagree, at least completely. In my defense, I do not try to pick them up, giving them a wide berth. South Mountain Park in Phoenix is actual Sonoran Desert scapes, so I either adjust to their presence and give them space, or avoid the park for all hiking.

This is pretty cool, its a road they close twice a year so snakes can migrate to and from swamps and hills. Its about 40 miles from me.

Bunch of loonies ... my thoughts exactly.

A person told me her tale, quite accidental but still un-nerving ...
She was hiking "Lost Ranch", a trail that at points is 2.5 ft wide, with rock wall one side and hills dropoff the other. June ... snek weather but she was watching and trying to avoid them. Stopped to rest, but when she started to walk again saw a diamondback half wrapped around her foot (I guess she made for a good shade-tree). Stayed very still THEN kicked the critter over the hill-drop in a side-slip-kick. Rare to have such a close encounter but with no attempt to bite during the slide-kick shows they avoid us as much as we avoid them.

 Cottonmouths are aggressive and vicious ... you don't chase them, but they'll chase you. I've thrown lead at many of them and killed several growing up in VA. Still one of my favorite things about Alaska, NO SNAKES. :)
