Orbital doesn't seem to be strong enough.

Think I may need to go get the drum.

 

I was just gonna suggest that. That's a pretty old finish on there!

I've sanded, stained, and finished one floor in my life. I do not want to do that again! Unfortunately in a couple years I need to do my entire house. I used construction paper to protect the living room floor. The finish is so fragile the painters tape took it off in several spots

Whats curious to me is yesterday we took one of the pieces I pried up and used an orbital handheld on it and the finish came up. So I'm a little baffled why it isn't working now.

 

You can rent them at your local hardware store. Not sure on rental cost but yes, they can get pricey!

 

Or....she could go old school and save the money for dip and Skittles.

 

Inconsistent coats and rotted boards too. Did you try it on the existing wood you're going to refinish? A lot of these old floors were finished in varnish and it'll be a chore to get them up. A drum sander is going to be your best bet... plus some good heavy duty 35 grit paper for initial pass.
