It depends on what wood you're starting with. That's black walnut, but has heart wood and sap wood mixed, with gives it that two tone coloration. You have light and dark tones. If you're staining oak or maple or pine, it's all gonna come out different. Gotta make a custom mix. Trial and error. I've spend hours coming up with custom mixes and testing them on scrap wood. And write down the formulation for future use!

I'm starting with maple. The rich brown is what the customer is looking for. She sent a second photo which is a medium-dark brown but said she prefered the color in this one. I'm going to the store tomorrow to look at stains, but thought I'd get other opinions before I do to maybe narrow it down.

Also I have plenty of scraps for trial and error.

Thanks for the tidbits. Just a local one here in Windham. My sister told me about it and shockingly offered to go with and help me out. She does the cricut vinyl doo dads and has done a crapload of fairs and such. That and shes the extrovert and bubbly af so that’ll help. I offered her commission to be friendly for me.

Definitely grab some walnut stain. That's gonna be your base. Maybe thin it out with mineral spirits iff it comes out too dark on your first sample, you can always add another coat to get deeper color. Its easier to add color than remove it. The finish younuse will also have an effect on the final product. Water based poly will be lighter and more medium brown. Oil based poly will be deeper and seem more saturated and add some amber hues as it ages. I like hard wax oils myself (rubio monocoat) they have a nice satin feel. Good luck!
