Mr Spags over at the Wood Whisperer just dropped a video about cutting boards. Might be able to pick up a tip or two from it:

Starting off the day with tears!
This side lines up perfectly. In fact 3 of the 4 pieces line up absolutely perfectly.
    20230322_102354.jpg

Then there's this side. I realized when I cut the angles, this piece was backwards, so the thick side is on the inside here instead of the outside.

My frame! My beautiful frame! Whatever shall I do with you now??? :(:(:(

Make a smaller frame ... still sellable. Flip the inverted piece around and cut it the correct direction at 45. cut the piece opposite the mis-cut narrower to match. Cut the other two sides down if the frame would be too oblong as a result.

Got more frame material? Make a different frame with the mismatched piece.

Also might help you to get a piece of chalk and draw a line on the angle you want. Chalk wipes off.

Dont beat yourself up...it happens;) i still make mistakes...

The serving tray I built was not planned as a serving tray. I twice contemplated making an improved version of my nightstand based on lessons learned. But both times the dimensions would not be quite right. So I glued the 2 attempts together and added strips of walnut and oak.

That one I can fix. The part for the stars is too small and uneven for my liking. I want to get a solid piece for that part anyway. But I gotta wait till I go get another board wide enough.

The frame I can make smaller frames from, but I can't use it for the purpose it was made for which is a bummer cause the rest turned out so well. Obviously not the end of the world though. I'm gonna try again on some hickory since I have enough of it for another frame.

I think all this thinking is making me tired or hungry.

Also, this might have been mentioned, if you did not know it before. But regarding to the sanding issues on the "open pore" wood ...

Poplar is harder than pine and is "closed" so does not have issues with those gaps. Oak is harder than pine but has grain gaps. Those gaps do need some consideration.

    Just my humble opinion.
