The barb & shape changes slightly on each one. I don’t have any handy right close but if you look at different kinds the difference is clear.

Shouldn't the type be determined by the size and type on the tools I already bought?

Yes, buy the same by all means but be aware of the smaller air passage sizes on some. Running long lines may require larger diameter hoses but that’s for other stuff & not nailers.

I don't really understand why they wouldn't just include a coupling that fits with the tool you have. Seems nonsensical.

    Yeah.
How many pneumatic tools have you bought? I'd just go get enough both male and female that are compatible to cover your equipment and swap them out if needed. And teflon tape. For your use, the Milton or M-type 1/4" flow should be correct and seems to be the one you pictured. All my air tools are automotive, so I use the other main type.

Many tools don't come with any fittings, you supply your own. You typically need more male than female since you typically have more tools than air hoses.

Maybe because The coupler end also has a couple different hose sizes...

Ok. I got the tank filled ans I got a starter kit for the couplers with a hose. They fit. Now I'm about to go outside and test the gun with everything hooked up. :)

Learning curves aren't always fun, but I do understand the benefit long term which is why I decided to go ahead and do this.

Sorry for my chaos, gents. If I could do it all over again I'd go to trade school and learn it all!

    Yeah.
Ha, I have daughters. I was once told that when you have a son, you just have one to worry about; when you have a daughter, you have all of them to worry about.

At my work I purchased hundreds of couplers over the years, the best by far are the Milton brand.
    :oldglory:

They last the longest & leak the least, don't bother with cheap ones.
Odd as it sounds "air is expensive" is something I have said often. Leaks waste energy, wear out your equipment and irritate you too.

This "M style" coupler (female) and plug (male) will fit all your tools with 1/4" threads.

Buy some extras of these so you have them as you add tools or to replace crappy ones that come with tools.

    s-711_pckgfront.jpg

You can also purchase a female threaded plug to fit hoses or tools with a threaded pipe end.

    s-728_pckgfront_1_1.jpg

Note the part numbers above and you are good to go. Your local NAPA store may carry them.

Don't worry about it ... it was only the tip ... if he ate the whole pencil, maybe worry. And I mean that regardless of what the internet says. ;)

Yeah, she seems OK. It's not poisonous, but it can make trouble in the digestive tract, so we'll know soon enough.
