What was done to the car for the baseline? If I didnt get the motor rebuilt I'd have a vortec setup on it by now, but I'm too scared to go FI on this motor at this point :(

My engine is and was 100% stock. The fuel system is OEM and the internals are OEM. I have a real good tuner who has done 23 AVO turbo kits and 100s of others. The stock FA20 (with few exceptions) is strong but highly susceptible to octane. It'll do 8psi no major issues... Anything more the fuel system will need upgrading. There are guys running 400 hp on stock internals on E85. Biggest issue is tuning and cooling. The AVO turbo is bottom mounted unlike GReddy and its imitations which are top-front mount. The air flows better on the bottom so less cooling issues. Otherthan that I wouldn't push more than 300-350 on pump gas. The high compression is the issue, it was designed to run in japan on a lot higher octane. Either way I'm comfortable with 275hp, car has some balls now.

Also I wouldn't run anything less than 92 octane at 8psi or higher. I have two maps, 6 for 91 octane and 8 for higher octane.

Nice man! Iv never seen a 100% stock n/a, no tune get higher then 162 at the wheels. I'm at 181 with full header back with stage 2 tune. I'm looking for a stock fa20 to build now that I don't trust my current one.

Well it only had 6000 miles on it... Maybe that why? Love all that power now, just have to avoid speeding tickets

I can get 100 octane here... For like 7-8 bucks a gallon.

That would be nice but not at that price. You could make much more power with 100 octane

Great to see some boost experience! Your comments on the heat issues are right on par with what I've heard too. That's one of the reasons why a super charger is a great candidate for this car. A turbo increases the exhaust manifold surface area and further increases it due to the turbo housing. The idea of a bottom mounted turbo (like you mentioned) has piqued my interest for that reason but I'd worry about clearance and rain/water though. I won't cast doubt till I look at the kit though and see how low it's mounted.

Here in Texas 93 is widely available with E85 available in a few places. I'm fully aware that the fuel system will need upgrading and really wouldn't consider anything close to 300whp without it. Just too risky running lean. Especially at those compression ratios!

You lucky you have get 93 octane and E85 so easily. I'm heading to Cali next month and I had to get a lower boost map for the 91 octane. With 93, easily make 300hp on stock internals. The fuel system is very flexible and there are many boosted FRS/BRZs running around 300hp on the stock fuel system. I'm not even worried about it. As for the bottom mount turbo... most subies place their turbos low and this is within the factory skid plate. It is the optimal place to mount a turbo for cooling purposes. Almost no air is channeled to the front/top mount locations and thats why you see guys with new radiators, fans, ducts... etc. Also, a low mounted turbo shortens the headers and reduces lag. Oh and its stealth, if you look at my engine... its not obvious to the layman that there is a turbo installed.

On a side note, just burned through my first tank of gas... 24 mpg mixed driving. only a 2 mpg drop from NA. Still average about 30 on the highway too.

thats probably it... the engine was designed and tested in Japan where they use a higher octane gas. This compression ratio is very finicky towards octane.

Which kit do you have exactly? How's it doing in the heat? Any cooling issues yet?
