Military, that 20 year retirement sounded good at the time when I enlisted 15 years ago.

I'd die if I worked in an office. I need to be able to go outside at any given moment.

Looked good to me too for awhile then decided it wasn't worth it.

Yea I've been down that rabbit hole many of times. Cant really complain to much with my experience in the Marines though. Currently in Germany and after this tour its time to start thinking about retirement for me.

OP what line school you going to? I have looked into going to the Southeast Linesman Training Center in Georgia. I'm applying for apprenticeship this week in New England since I'm moving back up north.

NorthWest lineman college in Oroville, California. They have a campus there m, Idaho, Texas, and Florida. But I have a family friend who is one of the top lineman guys at PG&E here and Humboldt and us helping me out to apply to some places and see if I can get hired off the streets and save about 20k!

Haha same boat. My wife's uncle is trying to help me get into the apprenticeship off the street without line school. I have my GI bill and I will use that to go in Jan if I need to but I'm trying not to use it in case I want to transfer or finish my degree

Yeah, I'm really hoping I can do this but I'm willing to do whatever, just excited to get a career started and not be 100k in debt like a lot of my friends who go to college and say you NEED a bachelors degree to get a good job

Military or trades school seems to be the best way to get a hefty paycheck and minimal debt. Seems like a win win. 23 years more, i can retire from the field at 53 ish, into the office until i can collect all the pensions

Ya I been in about 8 years and I work in the intelligence field. There's great money to be had but it's at the cost of deploying again so it's really not worth it. I want to just work outside and make good money with good benefits and have a little risk like I'm used to.

A lil overtime never killed anybody

Military is great. All the tax free pays you get make it generally worth it. It's been a great run and definitely well worth it but for me it's just on to the next stage in life. I worked CNC before I was in and I really enjoy the ability to grow different skills

You can use your GI bill threw the apprenticeship. I was making quite a bit with it. Also there's a thing called "helmets to hard hats". I'd look into that.

Hmm never heard of that one I'll look into thanks for the heads up. I've heard that you can use your gi bill through the apprenticeship as well just never looked into it heavily yet. Not sure if I want to use it or transfer it when I have kids

The Navy types can use Navy COOL before getting out and use that for civilian licenses/certifications related to their military jobs. Not a bad program for us and free.

A lot of trade unions will allow you to test into journeyman status if you have the hours in the category. For example if you were an electrician in the military and have the hours needed for the state certification.
