    It all stacks on...
    AND I have penalties for underpayment as well...
    AND the underpayment penalty on $28K for the FEDS I think is LESS than the underpayment penalty For $7K to Massholia...
    If you made $60K in salary and paid your 22% and then made 50K in short term gains and 10K in long term gains after cancelling out for losses...You owe 15% on that 10K or $1500 and your $50K is stacked on your $50K salary
    and since you've now "made" 100K in income and the tax brackets are:

    I'll do it for single but it's all the same...
    You own 22% on the $$ between 50K and $86,375 so
    36,375 x .22 = $8002
    PLUS
    24% on the 100K-86,375 =13,625* .24 = $3720
    So $1,500 (Long term gains) + $8002 (first bracket) + 3720 (24% tier) =
    Total taxes owed $13,222 FEDERAL on TOP of what you owed/had taken out (assuming you had your "normal" rate and break even if you had no gains)
    and then if you have STATE taxes you also have to figure that out..
    I used HR Block Deluxe fed and state...I wait until it's like $15 on Newegg and grab it.
