I just read some article about a land cruiser wondering what that had to do with robbing a church. Now I get it.

    Any electricians in here?
Adding a light switch on the wall to switch an outlet in the closet. Going to tie both into the existing outlet in the hall.
Pic shows existing outlet and a sticky note on the wall where the switch will be.

Can I run the wires down behind the baseboards and back up the wall where the switch will be around the 2x4s? Or do I have to somehow drill through the 2x4s in the wall to get a straighter shot? What are the codes for this?

Proper would be at least a foot from the floor about even with your plug. If you put it behind the baseboard, you run the risk of accidentally nailing into it or worse someone else years from now unexpectedly doing it. Possibly short/fire/electrocuted.

Junction boxes? That needs to be fixed. I'm told that junction boxes need to have a blank plate covering them so they're easily accessible.

There's the rub. Use a sharp razor knife, option 1. cut laterally from the wall socket to the area below where you want your switch. Stop on far side of last stud before door jamb. Once open drill holes through studs, run wiring up to switch. patch hole
Option 2. Remove outlet and box so you can see into void, you need to determine what side of the stud the current outlet box is on. If you can see to left, fish a measuring tape inside to determine how far the next stud is and cut a large enough square so you can drill through stud. Repeat till you get to your desired area. It's more surgical but less destruction.

If there's access to the attic above, could you go up from the switch into the attic then fish down to the outlet?
