I would have ran the floor opposite of what the hack did.

 

90 degrees? Then it would be parallel with the floor joists. It's a 40' long span.

don't lay the boards in the kitchen at the same time as the other side of that half wall.... do it on one side, then however it crosses over the half wall at the end back track to the kitchen cabinets. cant expect the face of your kitchen counter tops to be the perfect depth from the front of the house to match up with a whole number of boards.
