For some reason this didnt make it to live last night, but straps didnt act like i thought so i improvised a bit

 

Probably depends on what you're cooking. It'd probably be ideal for baking with an old cast iron cookstove, but for frying eggs I'd rather use fir in the firebox. Fast and hot, then it goes out rather than cooking you out of your house

 

AH, I see. I forget that lots of people don't cook in/on a woodstove that often
Maybe as the heat source. I've always used fruit or nut woods for smoking, though. I tried Oak and Maple once or twice and didn't really like the flavor. I imagine Madrone would also have a very strong smoke flavor.

 

Apple and black cherry are usually my go-to, but I typically only smoke chicken or pork.

 

I lack the patience for smoking a nice big chunk of red meat. A pork loin or small shoulder or a chicken I can manage, but a good-sized beef cut takes so long that my AD-HD kicks in and I lose focus.

Chicken or pork loin aren't bad because I can mow the lawn or weed the garden while they're cooking. But longer than that and I run out of things to do and go stir-crazy, so I don't do it anymore, haha!

 

I've smoked trout before, but I really like it better panfried. The GF isn't crazy about fish, so usually I only eat it when we're camping. I get up WAY earlier than she does (like, 4:30 vs her 8:30, lol) so I like to go out and catch breakfast. Absolutely nothing better than some trout or white perch in hot cast iron with eggs and some baked beans for breakfast while you're camping.

 

@tcBob anything to worry about here? Figure probably not but just thought I'd ask.
