Hey Taco Fam! Long time lurker here. I was about to get a 2018 Cement OR DC, but after reading through the many many threads here on TW there seems to be so many underlying issues with a new Tacoma that it is scaring me out of buying one at the moment.
    Namely:
    - transmission issues
    - seating position/comfort
    - leaking brake light housing ruining headliners
    - TSB updates not fixing engine problems
    - and more...

Those of you with 3rd Gens, would you do it over again?????????? Are the '18's and 19's better having resolved these issues?

Thanks for any insights here, I feel like TW has talked me off a cliff so far by not purchasing.

I have done it over again. Had a 2016 OR Access Cab for 3 years, 58k Miles.
Traded it for a used 2017 Pro with 8k miles just for rear seats, cement color and I wanted to start my build over.
    I love them both.

I’m 6’1, 220lbs, no seating complaints. I don’t have moonroofs with lower head clearance so I can’t speak for those drivers.
    No transmission issues.
No leaking 3rd brake lights on either. (Yet)

If you realistically won't make heavy use of the bed, look at a 4Runner. Separate thread going for that right now...

    - transmission issues -
Your experience will vary. There's nothing actually "wrong" with it, it's just very different.
    - seating position/comfort - Again, this is a personal preference.
    - leaking brake light housing ruining headliners - This has been addressed and if anything is under warranty.
    - TSB updates not fixing engine problems - Again, it's just a different transmission. It's not broken.
    - and more... - Please do tell

Read 2nd Gen forum and you will feel better about purchasing a 3rd.

    Mainly snowflake issues in 3rd.
Get 7 yr extended warranty and relax if it bothers you.

Only a dead battery in 2.5 years for me.

@LivinOnEdge Thanks for your insights!!! So great hearing that the vast majority are happy with their trucks. A few other petty things I've just heard here and there - like not having disc brakes in back. I actually rented someones Tacoma a few weeks ago. It was a 2018 and was really impressed with the transmission - I'm coming from a 2005 Xterra with 150k miles on it. Couldn't believe how smooth the ride was and how quiet it was!

I'm 5'10 w/ moon roof and its pretty much perfect room size for me. MT trans with zero issues this far and compliments my lifestyle 110%

My full size f150 was a great truck but theres alot of reasons why I'm in a taco. Like someone else said get in and test drive. Sit in it, move around. Good luck

Not having disk brakes in back is actually cheaper to maintain and is not really any kind of negative. The truck stops just fine. Even when towing. This is my 2nd 3rd Gen Tacoma, while I still don't favor the transmission myself, I still love this truck.

Forums are much like surveys, you're way more likely to get detractors than supporters.

People come here for answers to problems so it's easy to get caught up in the comments and think every Tacoma owner has issues.

Nothing could be further from the truth, you're just not gonna see "Another day with absolutely no issues" threads in any auto forum.

I bought my '17 offroad after owning cars for almost 2 decades. I'm very happy with it, but I would think that a lot of the people that have an issue with the transmission previously owned a truck, and the change in transmission personality is very much noticeable to them. I knew going in that going from car--> pickup would result in a different driving experience... so I have no complaints. Ignorance is often bliss.

Regarding the other things like leaky 3rd brake light... I"ve not had that issue. In fact, I've had zero issues that needed rectifying in the 1.5 years I've owned it.

sortof stock. 6112/5160, pro wheels and a tune.
I have had a few Tacoma’s, my 2011 had some issues...nothing major that ever made me question it getting me from point A to B. Dead nuts reliable. They all have their strange squeaks, rattles...all. My 2017- only issue was the speedo cluster failure (3 times). 2018s sr’s now have sr5 clusters. Again, never questioned its reliability.
My ‘16. Same. Tranny is strange and is hard to get used to, but that’s just how it’s designed.
Bottom line- most issues are small and because we constantly messing with stuff. I’ve found those who complain the least- their truck is stock haha. (Not always, but I see that quite a bit)

    I voted probably.

I have had a lot of issues with my truck, but fortunately I have had great success for the most part with the TSB's issued. I continue to have some small issues, but for the most part my truck is pretty good I think. My last big complaint is that I have to run 93 due to a miss on regular.

In it's class, there is nothing else I would recommend right now. That might change in 12 months or so though.

Aren't a bunch of 1st gens having complete frame replacements due to excessive frame rust?

    "Best Gen" FTW huh?

Obviously I jest, every truck has issues. The real question is do the positives out weigh the negatives? I did a lot of research on different trucks (and different gens of said trucks) I am still confident in buying a 3rd Gen Taco. That is if I can get the freakin dealer to get me what I want...
