I saw a Toyota rep in a video saying the reason they didn't go with disk brakes in the back is that when off-roading there's potential to get grit/sand/rocks stuck in them. And with drum that's less of a problem.

@NMTrailRider Mind is definitely eased. I'm not coming from a sedan either. Used to the ride of a 2.5" lifted 2005 Xterra with 33"s. The Taco I rented for a weekend felt like a sports car compared to my DD.

That's what the dealer told me as we'll....and you know that is complete and utter bullshit.
Using that flawed logic the fronts should have been drum as well.

....and IMO the braking on the taco sucks compared to the 2012/11 ram 4x4 trucks that I've put several hundred thousand miles on.

I was considering the ram eco diesel but love the taco's looks, wanted a smaller truck, taco's longevity (at least 1&2 gen) & wishing for a bit better fuel economy.

I dunno if i'd buy it again, the transmission-engine mismatch seems like a fatal flaw that will be the failure point in the future and add the lack of a power or AC'd seats for a lackluster "tech & premium" vehicle.
Out the door it was still a bit cheaper than the 53k msrp for a gmc 1500 with most of the crap I wanted.

It does not really matter to me, but I don't know if I buy that explaination either. Suppose you could have asked that Dealer why Landcruiser's, FJ's, and 4 R's have them when they are known as off road vehicles too.

Good point and that makes it an even more blatant line of shit. .....and don't forget they have power seats too! The ones in the taco feel like they adjust in 2" increments....never right.

The brakes in the taco are really nonlinear, grabby and unsure and that's even compared to my 93 pathfinder. I read a magazine review where they bitched about them..

Holy fuck man, I just drove 742 miles this weekend pulling a 3500 lb trailer halfway and an empty trailer back. Guess what? The brakes were good. Both ways. I have almost 30K on it in less than a year. Brakes are fine. Stopping distance is same as other vehicles this weight. I don't know what you are bitching about with "linear" but, you press the brake easy, it gently slows down. Press harder, it slows down quicker. Press real hard and now it's all about coefficient of adhesion of tire on road surface. Rear drums, whatever the reason Toyota did it, work just fine. Find me a truck with 4 wheel discs that stops quicker than the Tacoma. You can't. Geez.

I bought the first TRD OR AC to hit the lot of Toyota of Dallas back in September 2015. 3 years and 57k miles later still in love with this truck as much as when I first bought it. No issues whatsoever with transmission, 3rd brake light housing leaking, got the TSB for the squeaking speaker on the side, no rear diff seal leaking and my stock battery is still going strong. I drive and wheel it like I stole it also. It’s really a shame Nissan stopped giving a shit about the Pathfinder and XTerra.

Went through this debate of upgrading form my second gen. I think it all depends where you live - In CA we don't have rust issues, so the frame rust is no issue for me. The second gen is a proven truck (other than head gasket in early years and blower motor).

I drove a third gen and could not handle the transmission shifting. Felt really awkward to me. I think if I got used to it then the transmission wouldn't have been much of an issue. I also felt as if it was more gutless, but again that's coming from someone on stock gearing and 35's. I really do like the new colors!

I would do test drive on for an extended period of time if possible and move around in it. Then test drive a clean, unmolested, and well taken care of second gen. See which one you like better!

Not sure who Travis is. Bought this locally from a TW buddy, and it was originally fabbed by another TW member that is local to me and was on his 2nd gen for awhile.

Travis is the owner of Lone Wolf Offroad in Krum, Texas. Probably his work. He made some bars for me. They look similar to mine.

Nice and 2nd gen shouldn’t be used in the same sentence.
