Hey all! I haven't posted here much since joining, but I've done my share of lurking and researching. I wanted to share the story of my rough commute this past Friday, and also how much I am impressed with how well our trucks are engineered.

This past Thursday we had a small snow storm move through our area, which left about 6-8 inches across our region. I worked from home to avoid any mishaps on the commute, and figured I would be fine the following day. Friday morning, as I'm about 2 miles away from my office in a suburb-ish area, I am going through stoplight after stoplight as I do everyday (important piece of info to understand that speed had no part in this incident). As I come to the crest of a dry hill, the decline on the opposite side is a sheet of ice. I notice that there is already one person spun out in the middle of the road with pedestrians standing around him assisting. I apply light brake pressure, and all four wheels lock up. I had to make a quick decision to hit the car that was already stopped, the pedestrians helping, or a utility pole. I was able to regain enough control to direct the truck into the pole. This was the result:

My intention is to not just share this story, but to show proof at just how safe these trucks can be. You'll notice that I completely missed the bumper beam, leaving the front fender and far left engine compartment to take the hit. My passenger and I escaped without a scratch, and no pedestrians were hurt.

The truck is likely totaled, and I've already begun my search fro a replacement. Stay safe out there.

Thanks for sharing... Very glad you are okay. We love our trucks but the human factor beats that any day. Glad you were able to control enough to do what you bravely had too. Cars are replaceable, lives are not.

Its called crumple zones. They do more to manage energy absorption than being ridgid ever did.

Glad you were not injured and were able to avoid the other obstacles.

    Thanks for sharing...definitely totaled.

Every time I see a wrecked Tacoma, it's absolutely crushed...and that makes me happy. That crushing makes the truck absorb the impact and allows the occupants less force from the wreck and I'd sacrifice a truck over my, and my passengers, safety any day. Glad you're alright man, good luck on finding the right replacement!

I'm hoping to get back to the truck tomorrow to get a few accessories off of it. If for some reason I don't use the rails, I will let you know!

I'm glad you're ok man. I wrecked my 06 a week ago and had the actual bumper go under the truck in front of me, so like you, I took out more damage on plastic parts and fenders. Hope everything works out for you.

Thanks for the all the kind words! It's definitely unfortunate, but it is what it is.

I have no intentions to buy a 3rd gen. I like the 2nd gens too much.
