Ok, I replaced the speakers in my 2nd Gen tacoma with JBL three ways. Bought the correct harness, the 6x9 adapter, etc etc--everything's good, works fine. The problem is that I need to get rid of the stock tweeters because they make the whole thing sound harsh. However, if I unplug them I get no sound out of the 6x9s. i have no idea how to fake out the wiring to think there are still tweeters there. Drawing a blank. Worst case scenario I could tear up the paper tweeter cones so no sound comes out but there's got to be a cleaner way to do it, I just don't know enough about electric things to figure it out.

Sounds great if you just cover the tweeters with your hands. The tweeters at this point just make redundant treble and midrange that's already supplied by the big speakers. If I'd known ahead of time I just would have gotten woofers and new tweeters.

I believe you need to figure out which wires going into the tweeters and route them directly to the new speakers. The lowers speakers run thru the tweeters.

I forget which wires, but I recall seeing it here while searching speaker upgrades.

I think all I need to do is connect the black and the red together, but that seems a little weird to me. (black and red are what supply the tweeter but there's a white that goes to a capacitor to suppress the bass signal if I understand correctly. Not sure what the fourth wire is for.)

So I changed my search parameters a little and came up with the answer, which is the following, if anybody's interested:

"OK, so what I ended up doing was I took the harness on each door panel that connects to the stock tweeters, cut them at the connector, and then soldered together the like color wires."

That’s what you needed to do. Input and woofer go thru that connector
