If it’s under a factory warranty, they should give you a loaner vehicle while yours is being fixed/looked at.
If it is not under warranty, you aren’t going to get far without paying some amount.

There are very few shops that look at a vehicle for free.
The ones that do, usually do a code scan, multi-point inspection, and back it out the door.

I am NOT a technician. I have/do “free” inspections and diagnostic. Well, to the extent of my abilities.
But if I were a technician, and my sole source of income was from diagnostic and repair. I would absolutely charge for “looking” at any vehicle.

Again. If it’s under warranty. You should pay nothing. And the issue should be looked at and taken seriously.
    No argument there.

Any mods to the radio? There is a speed circuit between the combination meter and the radio to prevent certain function on the headunit

It was under warranty and they ignored the issue entirely.

    Yeah, I will agree here.
They should have taken a look at it.
Now, you have to figure it out on your own.
Sorry man. If I had a scope, and lived closer, I'd take a look.

I see the dealer's service department view. They do operate on facts. Your speedometer is showing a correct speed. Here is tacoma's speedometer check. You are set for 72, it fluctuates between 70 and 73. For them, it is acceptable and there are no safety concerns.

Does it fluctuates at any speed in CC? Does it fluctuate when CC is Off?

Back in post #17, he said only in while in Cruise Control.
Which makes this a bit more complicated to diag.

Hello, i had the same thing happen to my 23 off road auto with 6000 miles. I noticed it fluctuating when I used the speed hold cruise control, never really use adaptive so I don't know about that mode. It happened many times at different speeds. I caught it on video and took it to the dealer with my video for diagnosis. They called me up a few hours later saying I couldn't have my truck for a week or two as they need to program my milege in a new cluster and ship it out then install it. I got a loaner for free. They replaced it. It is better but still get a fluctuating speedo needle sometimes and isn't as pronounced. The digital was always solid and never had fluctuations.

Definitely need a high speed scanner(techstream or similar) to capture this fluctuation.
I know that techstream can do a dataloging only for 2 control units.
Fusion obd2 can do across all, as longer modules on the same branch of CAN.
I would start with ECU and CC control unit to see if CC requesting a torque and TPS responses.

I didn't know OBD Fusion could do that?
I actually have that app. I had to buy a OBDLink to program a Ram 1500 Brake Actuator Module.
Then downloaded Fusion for my truck. Haven't played with it much.
It cost like $14.99 for the OE level PIDS and stuff.

Thanks for letting me know. I need to play with the app more.

Back in the day it was under $30 to hook the truck to the phone.
For tacoma, most modules are on the same network. Main Body and TPMS are on the separate

Is it only at a particular speed or at all speeds? Only the speedometer is acting up and no other gauges?

From the video it sort of looks like maybe the stepper motor that operates the needle is having an issue.

Ya well I believe if one dealer can't find/fix take it to another.
Seems like too late for you for warranty.
    Maybe just don't use cruise.
Ya I know but I hardly ever use cruise.
Will never use e / elec vehicle or anything associated like it my life !
Gotta support internal combustion and oil patch which is a backbone of North America !

I've noticed it at more than one particular speed. Only the speedometer is messing up.

You could check the wiring behind to make sure nothing is loose. It seems that the combination meter could be a culprit. Are you still under 3/36 warranty?

Green wire is the speed signal output for speedometer. It goes to from Skid Control connector to Combination meter via junction connector IS3.

He's been to the dealership, and they ignored the issue and sent him packing.
    That's why he's here.

Checking the wire and connector you posted above, is all he can really do without a scope.
Thanks for the diagram. I kind of backed out of this thread.
Not a lot we can do here "easily" to help over a thread.
It's going to take time and a scope to prove the issue.

    Truly, thanks for this.

I just crept over 36K. Even if I was still under warranty, I don't know if I'd take it in. I've read so many guys do this, are without their trucks for weeks due to the inability to advance the odometer as Toyota programs another cluster, and then get the truck back and still have needle issues. It leads me to believe it's not the cluster, or if it is, Toyota just has a large batch of bad parts. It happens so intermittently, that at one point I figured it had fixed itself as I went months without seeing it (and I use CC every day). Unfortunately, that was not the case.
