Been around TW way before I joined back in November. Didnt have a taco so I all I did was read.

But now I am getting real close to get a tacoma. I am looking at two choice and I needed your opinion. One is just a stock 2011 4x4 db and the other has the offroad package. I know the OR offer rear lock and some other stuff.

Currently living in Texas and probably be driving down the beach to do some fishing. But Ill be moving to Arizona in a few months and will do some trail offroading. But not going to do major offroading like rock climbing or at lease that will be in the future ;) Would the stock 4x4 will be able to handle the soft sand at the beach and some not so major offroading?

    Too few to list. 10 4runner SR5 4x4- 09 Pre-Runner TRD-OR AC- 14 Prius Two- 08 xB
If you can afford the OR, get it. It has A-Trac which an SR5 doesn't. Acts like a locker on both axles.

    Im getting there......
it could but the locker is real useful.....also the interior of the trd packages is way more durable and more comfortable......I would highly recommend forking the money and going for the off road.....my friend just got a stocker and she still likes my truck better for the interior.

    you sound like me.

I got the SR5, didnt need what the sport or Off-road added to the truck.

The best thing you could do is just replace the stock tires with a good all-terrain.

With only 4000 miles on the truck, i replaced the stock tires with a set

of goodyear Duratracs. These tires have performed very well, even in the snow.

This set up would have no problem with handling what you want to do.

Check out my photos to the left, i have had it in some off road stuff

and plenty of snow, and have not got stuck once.

ya if i had the money, i would've gotten an off-road. but i was looking to save the most cash possible, so i figured a 4x4 sr5 would do the job. i wont use the 4x4 a lot anyway. i only go to the snow and the beach like twice a year

I am still thinking.. Since I probably can throw in all terrain tires and surf in the sand and minor offroading on the stock 4x4. Then add the locker in the future. Hell, I seen 2wd taco in the sand a few times and they do alright. But if I add 3g I can get one with A-Trac and a rear locker.

I believe that A-Trac prevent loss in torque on the wheel that has traction. But does it automatically does it or I have to turn it on?

You probably won't even NEED 4x4 if you were to stick to corpus style beaches... and I did some awesome exploring all over arizona fire breaks etc in a rented grand am. FLat and hard. Regardless.. we never had any of that fancy stuff (atrac or even lockers) back "in the day" and got around just fine. Won't call em gimmicks.. but they are nice to haves and don't offer much beyond some maybe comfort or a little edge on stuff you might not be trying anyway.

I've driven my 2wd Tacoma in soft beach sand here in Florida using the Auto LSD to get me out when I got stuck. Worked great. Since it comes standard a regular 4x4 s/b more than enough.
