The paragraph in the manual is more succinct and descriptive than any of us randos are. You must be a visual learner. Here is Youtube:

OBTW, I didn't call you a name. I pointed in the direction of the best answer. And I continue to try to help.

Trailhunter here- the start/stop issue with the hybrid is a non-issue. There is no irritating delay like there is without the hybrid motor when you let off the brake. The motor integration between ICE and hybrid is very smooth. I was expecting this based on the same with our RAV4Prime. Unfortunately, the driveline and motor is not quite as smooth as the RAV4Prime. As for the running directly on battery- I got it to do this once- very light throttle over flat ground, it would roll around 3-5 MPH on the battery only for about 40 seconds, then the motor kicked on. Much smaller battery means this isn't really what it is intended for, but it will do it for a little while.
I haven't dug under the hood yet, but I don't know if the AC requires the motor to be running. The RAV4 AC is an electric heat pump- it will run for a long time on the battery- only the window defrost causes the ICE to start. I suspect the Tacoma is similar, but I haven't driven it enough to know for sure what runs the AC compressor, so on this, I'm talking out of my ass.
I was very disappointed to find that the engine has to be running to use the 120V outlets....

Pro has the hybrid. Reading through the TIS documentation, the control unit in the motor generator (Toyota's name for the electric motor) acts as both an alternator for the auxiliary battery and also as a starter for the gasoline engine. There must be a significant amount of lines of code relating to the charge state of both batteries and the operational state of the engine. You have two power sources available to you. It is going to use the most efficient, available one. I think it probably acting as it should and you should just get used to it. Resistance is futile.

Any trained tech is welcome to intercede.

Some have been on the waitlist with a deposit- with no opportunity to testdrive. I bought mine quickly (only a few days deposit, to hold the vehicle)- as there aren't many available, and even things noticed on a test drive (drive line rumble, in my case) weren't enough to turn down the vehicle. It would have to have been pretty glaring to turn down a hard to get vehicle, particularly with things I know were factory, or were likely to shake out in the first 500 miles. Things like irritating autostart might not even show up on an abbreviated test drive. In my case, no dealerships are allowing test drives on Trailhunters, as most are already sold when they arrive.

I have a 23 Sequoia Trd Pro. There’s no way to turn off the start stop. It’s not a start stop like a regular gas engine. When it stops, it’s in battery mode. It’s not simply just turning off the ignition. It’s completely different.

I found this It's the fourth/last post that is interesting, he talks about how much pressure you put on the brakes and how it relates to ESS

    Pasted from tacoma 4g
I have it but it never engages and I don't ever turn it off with the button. It takes ALOT of foot pressure to engage it. As you press the brake pedal it first has to travel past a certain point to engage the brake hold feature. You have to continue to press past that point to engage stop/start.

The only time mine ever engages is when I intentionally press hard enough to make it happen. The only time I do that is when I roll up to a major intersection that just turned red for my direction of travel. Those lights can take 2-2.5 minutes so I choose to save the gas sometimes.

The design of that parking brake is pure rubber dog shit.

It's totally non intuitive. It has two actions that are not apparent. Do you press to set or pull to set? I know the answer, but just getting in and seeing it for the first time, it's unclear. To set the brake, you should pull up on the button. The button should remain up, the light turns red. To release the brake, push down on the button and it should sink in so you can't press it further. The button turns green. The brake releases. This mimicks about 3000 years of how center console mounted parking brakes have worked since the time of moses. There shouldn't be a system as fundamental as a parking brake that needs one to read an owners manual or watch some dork who wears bad socks in a youtube video -- though I appreciate the video and it's simple and well done. I do not appreciate the socks. He needs to get some smartwools or feetures.

That's my rant and I will now take questions or comments from the audience.

Does the hybrid have a traditional starter or does the hybrid motor “start” the engine?

No they arent, plenty sitting in the TN/SET region. Expensive yes, many presold in some markets, but they are not ALL presold. Literally passed on two that were sitting on the lot not presold.

Yes they are! In fact, none have arrived in AZ yet. I had to go to San Diego to get mine two weeks ago and it was the only one I found in southern CA.

When you put a deposit down on one before it’s built, you still get to test drive it before signing the papers lol
