My taco hit its first 5000 miles today. Should I take advantage of the free maintenance or should I just do it myself? Is it worth taking it in?

I wouldn't because I'd have to wait 2 hours for them to rotate the tires and top off washer fluids. Not worth the time.

Plus I have OCD that I need to know each of the lug nuts is torque to spec otherwise I'd lose sleep

    Just me.......

Mine has 20k. She has never touched the dealer since I bought her. I got recall letter for the fuel pump. Since I do not have any symptoms I won’t take her there.

I know I have serious trust issues.. so for now, no dealer visits.

If you have the time, I'd say let them do the first one. Just an inspection and tire rotation.

Side Note: I've had a really good experience buying Oil and filters from the Parts Department. At least you still have some type of record sowing that you purchased the stuff. And their products aren't that bad priced.

I let them do it. Just check after and make sure they didn't mess anything up. If they did, they fix on their dime. My free maintenance is up and now what...

Oh there will be some mods all right
My own personal opinion, if you are physically able to do your own maintenance you should. Then you will know everything is done correctly. WAY too many horror stories of dealerships over tightening and under tightening and not doing the work they said they did. I would be very happy for my tundra to never go to the dealership even once.

    I understand that man.
I really do have OCD, and neither way is good for me.

If I do it myself, I question everything I did.
I check and recheck. Takes my 3 times longer to do a simple job.

If I pay someone else, I worry they might not have done it right.

OP, I would let the dealership do the work.
If it breaks, they fix it.

If you break it, you fix it. And pay the bill.

It’s free and u have documentation that the service was done in case any issues should arise . It’s not just tire rotation and top of wiper fluids . They check driveshaft and parts visually . Grease the zerks if you do off roading . But you need to let the dealer know that since they won’t perform that part unless specified by the customer they off road .

I purchased a pre-certified and got free maintenance for 2 years. I want them to be on the hook if something happens. If you do it yourself. You may be unable to prove you did the maintenance and did it correctly. They checked the frame and will rustproof it for free. I even got the service records from day 1 through the dealer. Mitigate the risk!

are you going to shake a stick at getting your floor mats inspected. 2 free oil changes, overtightening of filter housing and lug nuts?

I just finished my last one at 30. I'll be doing my own from now on, but I certainly had no issues at the dealer.

My dealer was cool enough just to hand me the 7 qts of oil and the filter once a year. I bought enough parts for my 1st gen that they must have figured i knew what i was doing. They still ran it thru the service dept and got the miles off the truck so it was on record as my two free oil changes and one cabin filter.

My '96 has 415,000 trouble-free miles on it and has never been back to the dealer since I drove it off their lot 25 years ago this month.
If I had been taking it back for their maintenance I'm sure it would be in junk yard by now.

Don't forget, they lube the propellor. I remember reading that after I got the 15,000 "free" service. I had to google that. I bought this truck with about 12,500 miles on it. I was surprised, since I bought it from a Ford dealer, that Toyota still honored the free 20,000 mile service deal.

I took mine to Hanover Toyota, one of the dealerships that has a good reputation for my 5000 mile service and I can't say a word bad about them. I made an early Saturday morning appointment so there were few people ahead of me. I was in and out in like 45 minutes.
I don't think I will visit the dealership for everything. I can do my own oil changes and many other routine things. I have a good independent mechanic too. Still those service are in a way included in the price of your truck. That and you want to start a service history so I say go get the work done you paid for it.

If you want to track you own work now or later the Toyota app allows you to enter diy maintenance and other shops work or you can also use Carfax

Nothing is free you’re actually paid for it when you bought the truck so Why wouldn’t use it?
