TX Baja vs Bilstein 5100s

I am looking at buying a used set of TX Baja Bilstein suspension, front and rear, for $250 off of facebook marketplace. I'm still waiting for the seller to get back to me on mileage on them, that could still be a deal breaker. My question is whether or not they will be better than the bilstein 5100s that I already have on the truck? I am not lifted, just looking for some better off-road riding shocks. The previous owner of my truck installed the 5100s, so I am not sure of the mileage on them either, but I got the truck at 100,000 and now it's at 136,000, so it's at least that plus some. Any advice? Thanks.

 

IIRC the 2nd Gen Baja TX dampers are essentially Bilstein 6112 fronts and 5160 rears (both are rebuildable) so they are a big upgrade to your 5100 everything being equal.

 

How would one go about rebuilding them? And how expensive would it be?

 

Bilstein rebuilds them in house.

 

Not many have success getting them rebuilt. Arizona might have better luck but it’s basically throw away up here where I am.

Those are too old for my liking. Not sure if it’s worth the time, let alone money .

 

Apples to Apples (same mileage/condition) the Pro/Baja suspension will be MUCH better than 5100's. I've got the TRD Baja kit on my truck and it's great. Like the others said, it's essentially a 6112/5160 setup that is custom tuned to Toyota's spec.

Contrary to what was mentioned above I had always read that these are NOT rebuildable. IMO, that's the biggest downside to them. $250 is an outright steal if they're in decent condition.

The Baja Bilsteins are not the same as the 6112's because the Baja models are progressive valving and much smoother than 5100's and 6112's.

 

I could also be mistaken but I swear I read that and feel it's sticking in my brain because it means when mine are toast that they need replacing.

Also, it could be that the TRD versions are not rebuildable but that the factory 6112/5160 are. OP, you should reach out to Bilstein directly to get an answer.

 

The right most shock in that pics looks wet around the boot? Possibly a leak?

 

My friend said that as well. I asked the seller about it, and I have gotten no response, so idk. We shall see, but they aren't far from me, so I may still go take a look next week when I have time.
