This year's road trip. Will start in May, gonna head down the west coast via the coastal highway and then we're just gonna see how much of California we get to see with the potential for some quick rips into nevada as well. I've tagged a few spots in Google maps still need to do more research to solidify some stuff. I can confirm we will be going to Rubicon. Also want to hit death valley and a bunch more places I've only ever been to San Francisco so this is all gonna be new same with a few of the other guys coming along the trip will be from the 18th of may to June 3rd

Something that’s bigger news than a trip like that is either a diesel landcruiser or he’s having a baby. (Or getting married but I can’t remember is he is or not already)

    Back to the trip

So here's the list. So they way I usually do things is we will go to an area and then explore it and find a spot to camp for the day or night or however long we plan to be there. I also plan to compare areas I think we want to stay with a trail book I've gotta my hands on that was recommended by you guys here. Also there's the task of permits etc, it's a lot more complicated than here that's for sure but it's making it fun.

    Mt Ranier
    Mt St Helens
    Tillamook forest
Dunes city and or a permissible area
    Crater lake
    Shasta forest
    Lake Tahoe/Rubicon Springs
    Big Sur
    Big Bear
    Anza-Borrego state park
    Joshua Tree
    Mojave
    Death valley
    Black rock canyon
    Umpqua Forest

Things will obviously change depending on how long we stay in an area or if we have break downs. The hard points on this trip are going to be crater lake, Rubicon, and deathvalley.

As for the trucks well so far I've got 3 for sure and another 5 waiting for time off
    Going
Me: 09 taco double locked 35s armour
    90/94 4runner sas 37s armour
00 taco locked rear 33s and armour
    Maybe
08 taco LT 35s locked armour
04 taco locked rear 33s or 86 pickup sas 35sduals, locked etc( he can't decide would have to mod the taco more for the trip or take the rock bouncer)
09 fj cruiser locked rear 33s LT armour
09 taco double locked 35s armour
    03 4runner locked rear 33s armour

I realize death valley in May is going to be face melting but Im hoping we can travel one of the high elevation passes and have it be hot and not I want to die hot.

Well the maintenance is starting early. This year I won't have to rebuild the front end lol knock on wood!!!!

However the front two skid plates are totally screwed and won't survive Rubicon hell they're one hit from being useless on a normal trail. I looked at getting them reinforced but they'll just bend up right away if straightened. I'll post up some photos later. Also going to measure for shocks. My budget won't let me go as far as I want but I'm hoping to get the tire to at least drop below the slider
    For reference

Lift, armor and such. Money pit, check out the build thread...
To bad you aren’t goin to make it to Colorado on your trip this go around, maybe next time.

Forgive me cause it’s probably somewhere buried in the 30 pages of build, but did you swap your own gears? Seems pretty straight forward with a pre assembled unit. Front dif would probably be the pain in the ass. I have no experience when it comes to hear swaps, but my 4 banger needs to get its pep back!

Ya we really wanted to but I was handcuffed by time off available. Just felt the trip we planned for Colorado wouldn't be possible that early in the year cause of the snow level. I didn't do my own gears i bought pre assembled diffs and swapped them with a friend. Part of the part out truck that propelled mine to greatness

Actually speaking of gears.... it's come to my attention Yukon now makes 5.29s for the Tacoma front and rear diffs :anonymous::turtleride:

Subbed, great looking build man! Your truck has to be one of my favorite 4cyls on here.

How does your truck do on the highway whenever you're fully loaded for a trip? do you find yourself having trouble maintaining 75mph and having to downshift into 4th?

I've been considering re-gearing my 4 banger for when i step up to 295/70/17s which are a 33.25" diameter tire (load range e). I am also carrying a constant load of about 850lbs and i am only 2wd so i am thinking that 5.29s might give me a little more low end grunt for when i am offroad and can't just drop into low range like the 4wd guys. What are your thoughts on this sir? i am stuck between this and 4.88s. I dont really mind the drop in gas mileage that i'll likely encounter with 5.29s on the highway, i just want to be able to use 5th gear again and not constantly have to drop into 4th to maintain speed. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. I know you're running 35s so it's an apple and oranges scenario, but i feel like since i'm 2wd, the 5.29s might serve me better.

    @TYetti
