So the desicion has been made.

I've spent almost the last week deciding what to do with the now disabled Tacoma. I seriously considered a 2uz simply based on local availability as well as the 3uz because I live on the west coast and there are an abundance of JDM importers around. I even looked at the 2jzgte. I quickly eliminated the 2jz as it's high strung nature won't work with wheeling and the way I used my truck. The uz is the best option for replacement with its abundance of low end torque. It also has the ability to bolt up to my r155f with the use of an adapter, I've got the price to around 5500-6500$ I'm sure more things will pop up moving the price up further.

Still following ok... I went and talked with local 4x4 shop owner and general all knowing Toyota guy for an opinion on the situation. He showed me the final tally on a few V8 builds he's done over the years. Let's just say it gets expensive no matter how much you pre plan. He sent me over to the local machine shop he uses for engines and after talking with the owner who's also seen a few 2trfe's with the same issue. He says he's able to reman the engine for 4500 at the very top end using Toyota seals etc, also he's rebuilt some as long as 5 years ago and has not had one return with the ring issues. I also found an engine at a wrecker about 4 hrs away, they claim it has 40k km on it but haven't been able to prove it to me, although it is the cheapest option at 2500 it's far too risky imo, no guarantees or warranty and having to deliver my engine as a core could leave me with an engine that's shit and still needs a rebuild. I'll be proceeding with the rebuild in the near future. It's just the option with the least amount of questions.

Stay with me here.... you need 8 cylinders.....

Dual 2TRFE’s, both supercharged a la hot wheels twin mills 1969. You stay true to the 4 banger heritage, with wicked low end torque!!!

We can do this. We have the technology!!!

Noticed this summer my truck is taking oil too. Saw it first at an oil change, that there wasn't 6L of oil in the oil pan. Then I started to gauge the oil more often. Truck takes around a quart in 3000km. no leaks, no blue smoke. I changed the spark plugs an noticed one was more dirty than the others, so I guess it is a ring thing too. I also changed the oil to Castrol. Castrol smells "bad" compared to others, and I started to smell it, so I know it is burning and not going in coolant. It's a sad thing... I am trying seafoam to see if it can get the truck back on track. could just be a dirty ring that is sticked to the piston. I hope so...

Edit: I have 267 000 km on the clock

My brothers truck is an 09 with a 2.7. He’s been saying that it has been using quite a bit of oil lately. Now you guys have me wondering...

A few cases of beer and a welder and I might have a Cummins Tacoma lol

Mine started around 250k km I estimate it's escalated from 1L every 8k km to 1L every 1000-1500 I'd be worried. I predict that many 2trfe will fall victim to this ring issue and prematurely kill off an otherwise good engine. Personally I would get it scoped asap if your pistons are covered in more gunk than carbon you likely have the issue. You may be able to just re ring and replace the pistons but that will depend on what the cylinder walls look like

I try to add some tech into the photos

    I'd be concerned

Yeah why don't you do the Cummins conversion rather than spending all that dough to have an extremely underwhelming engine?

Given how you use your truck ditching spark plug wires would be the ticket for sure!

    And much more TW credit!!

2tre is distributorless anyways so it technically doesn't have spark plug wires it has coil packs. However this has come up a few times. The Cummins swap series is literally the shittiest engine they make. It comes from a line of small diesels mainly used in busses and small equipment in asia. They also have massive overheating issues and are just generally shit not like the 12v that earned the reputation. Also a 4bt although reasonably priced locally would overwhelm the ifs and make the truck so God awfully front heavy it would actually suck to wheel. Probably looking at minimum 10k to get that engine in and running with the trucks electronics and then another 20-25k for SAS because if you're gonna 4bt all the things you need wontons

Yeah well I wasn't necessarily talking about the Cummins crate engine.
What about the hilux diesel? At least that's Toyota, proven and will not be a fitting nightmare and the chassis are similar

Yeah i'll have to have it cheked. I just parked it now since I have a new DD from work. I'll be good to take care of the truck. I hope I got it in time... if not, trade in it will be:( i was already thinking about it for the future family (not yet in progress but still) that oil problem may just push things faster

Ya I looked at the d4d engines only 15k to get one here then do the install and try to make the diesel talk with the taco electronics, oh and replace the whole fuel system

    $15k??

Fuck that! No way!I'm sure you can get that cheaper unless you're talking about a brand new motor.
Your trans is already manual and the matching of the body electrical to the ECM is part of every engine transplant.
Shouldn't be that bad though since they're both Yotas and the Hilux is the Taco's twin

Common misconception the Hilux has more in common with the 4runner than taco. True but shipping one from Australia or NZ is insane, there's a reason diesel toys charges so much, then there's duty and taxes import fees, customs fees, figuring out radiators,AC getting a trans adapter made, clutches etc etc etc etc.. trust me I only work 4 10s I have a lot of time to read and research.

I wish it wasn't the case, but sticking with the devil I know is going to be the best option. It unfortunately messes with my suspension and driveline plans

Yep in your case you have to continue. Maybe you can get lucky and find another 2.7 to swap in this winter... hope the best tho! I dont want to see the end of this truck

I'm rebuilding I've found Multiple 2.7s even the dual vvti 2015 but none of the wreckers can physically verify how many kms are actually on the engines or let me see them running so fuck em.. most are cheaper than rebuilding but without verification they might as well have a million km on them cause who really knows

Sorry to hear of this trouble, have really admired your build. Any preventative measures for this?
