Sorry if you have mentioned already, but how are you liking the 4.88’s?

I’m ready to step up myself, but I’m considering 5.29’s since I have the auto which makes it such a dog.

4.88 gears with a manual is equivalent to 5.56 gears with the auto. Having had 4.88 with an auto, I’d recommend going to 5.29’s if you plan on armoring up and getting 33’s. I ended up converting my truck to a manual and it’s a lot better. Not just because of the final gear ratio but all the gears are much better.

Thanks for the feedback, sounds like 5.29’s are the way to go. I’m alreasy on 33’s, plate bumpers front and rear with a winch, sliders and full armor, so it’s slowwwwwwwww.......

I’m sure. Mine was slow even with 4.88’s. It was fine if there was no headwind and no hills. But even small inclines caused me to lose a ton of speed. I wished I would have gone with 5.29’s from the start. We don’t have huge mountains here but we have a few decent grades to get to the more beautiful parts of the state and it’s embarrassing getting passed by fully loaded 18 wheelers. I imagine it’s even worse for you in Colorado.

I've reached the limits of the 4.88s lol. However I'm not going 5.29s lol, got a few fun things up my sleeve. 190% going up to 37s. Also adding some power and making room for activities

Until you have to put the truck in 4lo to make it up a paved hill in the middle of summer you're not that slow

I know I've been absent for a while, but I'm just about finished the addition on my house. I'll be redoing my trip update, and updating the current state of the taco. Which isn't good right now but I'm gonna bring it back to life again

    I have a 4-cyl 5-speed manual on 33’s with 4.88’s and it’s a pretty good combo.

    Oh Wow!
You are the only one on this forum that i’ve found running a regear on the 5sp with 33’s

sorry to bug you but do you happen to know the RPM’s at the following speeds:

30mph(50kmh) ( what rpm and what gear can you cruise in? )
    60mph(100kmh)
    70mph(110kmh)
    75mph(120kmh)

I believe he swapped in a 5 speed from a third gen which has a slightly different over drive ratio, so his rpm may be slightly different. How significant I don’t know so I’m curious to see his response as well. I have 4.88’s and 33’s as well in my second gen 4cyl 5 speed so I can tell you this

30mph 3rd gear is about 2000 rpm, 4th is about 1500. I usually stay in 3rd just because of how heavy my truck is but I’m usually in 4th at 35. 30 is just one of those weird speeds that’s kinda between gears with my weight
60mph is 5th gear all day at 2500~
70mph on the speedo bounces between 74-75 on the gps and I’m at exactly 3000 rpm. I think that’s pretty reasonable since a stock truck with stock tires is at 2700 at 75mph. Truck feels great, motor doesn’t seem to mind one bit and fuel milage is pretty good. Stock gear with 33’s the truck struggled at those speeds and when I could use 5th it was 14-15 mpg. Same setup with 4.88’s I can run 5th most of the time and get 16-17mpg.

My numbers are pretty similar to @Wheelspinner. At 30mph I usually cruise in 3rd at about 2100-2200rpm.

    60MPH - ~2400rpm
    70MPH - ~2800rpm
    75MPH - ~3000rpm

How's the LCE clutch been? Mine is starting to slip and is ready to be replaced (120k mi). I was considering just slapping their heavier flywheel on too while I was at it given the impending mods/weight.
