As a recently diagnosed type 1 diabetic and fellow Tacoma enthusiast, I felt the need for a very specific thread to express feelings of negativity for type 2's (kinda kidding), health insurance (not kidding), and people who ask "can you eat that?" (Def not kidding)

Not just for bashing, but maybe helpful tips, views of new beetus tech and how having diabetes has helped or hindered your taco mods haha

Fire away like your pancreas cannot!

Type 1: sort of autoimmune, body knocks out the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin so now you need to use synthetic insulin since your body produces none. Weird in the sense that you usually see it in kids at 5 years old but it can happen at any point in time. Research is still ongoing.

Type 2:. Bad diet, lifestyle, genetics predispose individuals to their body resisting the insulin they still produce so they have to supplement it or take medications that make their body more sensitive to the insulin they produce.

Following for my wife, who spends a lot of time in my Tacoma. She was just diagnosed w/ T1 last week at 40, exercises every day, eats healthy. This is just so frustrating. Anyway, I have lots of learning to do to help keep her feeling her best. Thanks for starting another source for information and discussion!

    ummmm, not following

    treatment is expensive?
    mods are expensive?
treatment takes money that could be spent on mods?
health issues prevent having mods/upkeep done DIY and have to outsource to paid professional?

Definitely keep an eye on Good Rx for coupons for insulin which so far we have seen is highway robbery even w/ decent insurance.

You have to check your glucose 2-3 times a day depending on your care plan. That's 2-3 lancets and glucose test strips a day. Plus insulin syringe and insulin you have to self administer. All of that stuff isn't cheap and quickly adds up. Add in that some folks may not need that much insulin (usually kids) and you end up with refrigerated insulin that expires after a certain time and has to get tossed.

All of the above. Even with the highest premium insurance, doctor visits, medication, and pump supplies add up very quickly. That also doesn't factor in the time and effort necessary to keep the body regulated at a "healthy" level.

My wife is on a pump and a Dexcom because she had surgery last year (we hit our out of pocket max, making the Dexcom free).

We were in an apartment several years ago where deliveries were sent straight to the office for safe keeping until people could get off work. The office administrator put the wife's three month supply in the freezer, completely ignoring the "DO NOT FREEZE" warning tape. THAT was a freaking battle I did not want to have.

I was diagnosed about a month ago, and before my blood work came back and I saw an endocrinologist, they thought I had type 2. I was 118lbs, active, didn't drink soda or eat fast food, but vaped. So I quit vaping, exercised more, and pretty much cut out all carbs. Blood sugar still through the roof. Obviously none of that had any effect since I wasn't type II and in fact cutting carbs was pretty bad for me.

Finally got some relief by talking to an endocrinologist and nutritionist. I got insulin I desperately needed and the courage to eat whatever I damn well please (which is more healthy than most normal people anyways). My body stopped eating itself (always been skinny, but not that skinny since I've been sober) I gained 16lbs in about two weeks, kept off the vape, still exercise 4-5 times a week. I learned not to blame myself, because I didn't have anything to do with getting type 1.

I'm still learning how to dose properly and where to stick these crazy expensive libre sensors. That being said, I've been averaging 120 for the past week or so, and I feel pretty solid about that. I still have a lot of questions, and being as type 1 is pretty rare, I hope this thread can open up some discussion. Also, less money spent on beetus could mean more money spent on mods!

I'm using pens currently, but my endo wants to talk about the pump tomorrow. I thought I'd like the pump, but the more I think about it, the less I want it. Maybe it's psychological, I feel more "in control" when I have to count and dose and make a physical treatment if that makes any sense...Also, I don't know how I feel about having tubes hanging off my body like that haha. I'm very active, and I feel like it would get in the way. Maybe that's stupid. How does she like it so far, and what method is she coming from?

My son is T1 and has been since 2. He’s been on the pump since he was 5 and is now 14. Never slowed him down one bit. Those pumps can take some serious abuse.

i am curious if the condition could lead (later on down the road) to not being able to safely operate your Tacoma?

there's some options and choices out there for pumps. Have seen plenty of type 1 kiddos with pumps that are as active as any other kids with no issue (for the most part, still have to be careful to an extent). Not sure how true this is for all insulin pumps but the ones that I have seen personally do take some consideration as the pump supplies are model specific and the cost is substantially more than just buying insulin needles. I'd see what your insurance would cover in terms of pumps and pump supplies and make a spreadsheet to see which is a better choice financially as well as talking to your provider and go from there.

Also, rarely occurs but I have seen pumps screaming that kids are in the 50s and crashing but they are up and about with no signs/symptoms and a check with a dedicated glucose meter states that their glucose is well within normal values and stable. So doesn't hurt to double check the pump occasionally.

Just like anything else on Tacomaworld, research research research. Find people who have pumps and talk to them about their likes, dislikes, expense, hassles, headaches, etc.

Just like any other medical condition or emergency. Hypoglycemia is a concern and when your BS drops too low a diabetic can give the appearance of being drunk. Hopefully the person can recognize the feeling and catch it before their BS drops too low.
