Hi everyone, so I’ve gone through hell getting my power steering figured out in my first gen Tacoma. I’ve put three new pumps in it one of them didn’t even work when I got it and the other two broke while I was driving. One of the new ones literally broke from steering too quickly. Yes you heard that right a turn I was taking came up on me quick so I turned faster than normal and the pump just stopped working. One of the pumps that broke was the OEM one that I rebuilt. I know the next thing that could break is the steering rack but I have a brand new OEM rack and pinion in it and I’ve been at this so long I know it’s the pump. My question that I hope someone out there can answer is if the stock rack and pinion can run generic power steering fluid or if it absolutely has to be Automatic transmission fluid that is in it. I am planning on buying Trail gears power steering upgrade kit or their pump and reservoir but it has to run normal power steering fluid. I don’t know what to do at this point if anyone has any suggestions on what to buy or what to do for the pump I’m all ears…

Power steering fluid or ATF meeting Dexron lll specs should be fine, Honda's, some Ford's, and vehicles with electrohydraulic power steering systems are the only ones I've ever seen that are picky about power steering fluid.
Unfortunately the way things are with parts now that does not suprise me at all to get a run on defective parts, are you running stock suspension/tires or are you lifted/oversize?

I have a little bigger tires but that is it. I have completely stock suspension.

I wonder if the rack is beat to hell and maybe steering joints worn, has the rack ever been replaced? Bushings?

Bishop84 I have a brand new steering rack in it and brand new lower ball joints. The bushings were also recently replaced!

Technically you’re supposed to use ATF (automatic transmission fluid) if you go to the dealership, Napa or equivalent and ask them for the power steering aloud for your truck that’s what they’ll give you because that’s what Toyota calls for
