Saturday I noticed my '15 making a metal on metal sort of noise when moving, I think its brakes, even when brakes are not applied. Its always had lots of black brake dust on the front wheels, just like my '07 FJ always had. The Taco only has less than 10k miles. How many miles can you expect on the oem front brake pads?

If your brakes are worn out in 10K miles, one of two things are going on:

1.) You have a mechanical problem. ( Caliper seized etc... )
2.) You drive with your foot on the brake pedal.

I have always gotten at least 100K on a set of front brake pads. My last truck had the OEM pads on it and it was a 1993 twenty years old traded it on my 2012 Tacoma.

Same here. Replaced rear pads on my '06 Avalon awhile back. Had 182K on the clock - 3mm left on the pads - was within limit - changed anyway.

As stated above, mechanical failure or riding the brake pedal will lead brakes to an early death.

My mother could kill front pads in < 20K - rode the brakes...all the time.

Going on 80k on my original pads and will be replacing them in the next few weeks before I start towing my TT regularly again.

While we're on the topic - do these new pads eventually stop kicking out so much dust?

Pretty much daily I could turn a paper towel black from cleaning brake dust off my wheels.

74k on my OEM's, had them checked at 70k still have plenty of pad on them. I have a manual trans so mine will probably last longer than one with an auto trans.

I'm about to hit 100,000 miles, and have about 50% left on the front pads.

Many variables apply including trailer towing, driving habits, and other drivers. If it is just you and you baby them, I think 75k is reasonable. I would recommend looking in the rear drums every 25k or so. Blow out the dust and clean them up then put them back. If you lift the truck, put on giant mudders, pull a trailer, and drive it like you stole it, then plan on 35k miles

I had the same issue after I installed my lift - twice actually. Turns out the disc brake shield was rubbing against the rotor causing the "metal to metal" sound you are describing. If you use a long flathead screwdriver you should be able to push the shield out a but without having to take off the wheels.

Replaced my fronts at somewhere between 75 and 80k and they easily had 10k more in them.

Also it depends a lot on where you live, city driving will shorten the life. I live in the sticks and can drive for miles with out having to stop for lights or even a stop sign. 100K is fairly normal for me the rears will generally last twice as long as the fronts, my 97 had the original rear brakes when I sold it at 265,000 miles. I tow a camper and it looks like I'll get about 100K out of the front brakes on the "11" it's at 60K now

oem toyota pads are not known to be really dusty. 33,000 on my tacoma, can't tell which
wheels were on front longest, neither have much brake dust whatsoever (I rotate wheels every 7500 miles)

now, if I installed EBC greenstuff, in 1000 miles my wheels would be black with dust

At dealer, at 9500 miles front pads are less than .4 and rotors have heat spots, so they need replacing too. Pads are so worn Toyota won't cover under warranty but dealer doing a goodwill replacement. Don't tow and don't ride the brakes, so don't know why They wore out so fast. However where I live I think the traffic engineers own the brake shops

My 14 never had brake dust problems but when my mom picked up her 15 I noticed her wheels would be turning black.

Was the measurement on both sides or just one side. There is no way a properly operating brake system that is not being abused wore the brakes in 9,500 miles. If the above is true, you have a mechanical issue with a sticking caliper piston. Something is not right.

Something is hanging up. Make sure they clean and lube everything and make sure they check them at the next oil change

Have it checked out!You may of been hard on your brakes and already worn down the pads to were the calipers are rubbing on the rotors and they also may be warped.
