Aside from the unit itself, is there any additional hardware/ parts needed to install in an 8.4 open diff?
What is a reasonable amount of labor cost to expect?
Im talking ballpark of course, A small park.

You 100% should replace axle seals, pinion seal and the pumpkin gasket.

Next a new set of rear end differential/pinion bearings. Also if you want to regear, now is the time.

I imagine around 400-500$ labour but it really varies from city to city.

My receipt shows $1,440.35 in Western Washington. Your should be cheaper as my truck is/was an Off-Road with the 8" 3rd and was dropped off at the shop with an 8.4" 3rd member from a Sport model to be swapped and installed with the TrueTrac:

Ouch! I didn’t think an 8.4 third member would bolt up to and 8 inch housing. Wondering if a 2nd gen mechanical lsd rear end swap wouldn’t be a better idea?
