My dealer told me the same --especially when it comes to "body type" and "color".
Also if they happen to have one on their "to build" list it may move it along a little quicker.
When I asked for my 17 AC, V6, 4WD, Blue, no options exc. Tow pkg.,w/ dark alloy wheels (which I later found I disliked) there were none in the area, and none scheduled to be built. I waited and got what I wanted.

Working in a custom built machinery business in paper industry, and it having been a long time since I ordered my one and only new car built to order, I find this process fascinating. You would think that before the build, within reason you could spec out exactly what you want and know exactly how much you are going to pay.

If I understand correctly, my dealer tells me we'll get the model (OR AC), color (Cement) and options (Technology, Premium, Tonneau, mud flaps) that we want, but the factory may elect to add a few other goodies (exhaust tip, floor mats, etc.). Although that seems a little strange I'm OK with that - maybe the factory is smarter then I am about add-ons that make sense for my particular vehicle (and makes it more sellable in case a buyer welches out?). As long as they don't add something I don't want (like tube steps). Once they actually do the build we get a price. The biggest unknown is time, but they are saying 10-12 weeks delivered worst case. Just an interesting process...maybe that's the way all cars are sold these days. If it wasn't the end of the model year/start of the next and we were pulling from inventory it'd be a whole lot simpler and straightforward process. We did check Toyota inventory and the one truck that meets our basic specs is 300+ miles away and already reserved. Sigh...

I asked about ordering the exact tacoma you are looking for. I was told it could be up to a 5 month wait. something to be aware of with access cabs is getting into the back with cars parked beside you. since the front doors have to be open to get the back doors open you end up boxed between 2 open doors and the car next to you. then you have to close 1 of the doors to get to what you wanted to put in the back whether it's in front or behind the truck. go to the dealership and have you & your wife get into the same side with a car parked next to you and it will be clear. I owned an access '16 cab for 2 years and this is why I have a '19 O/R DC in cement with premium & tech in my garage now.

Thanks for the advice. My son has a 2009 AC Taco (4 cylinder 5 speed - yeehah baby!) so we're familiar with the beast. I hadn't thought about the dilemma you mention, but we have a country living lifestyle so we're not in parking lots so much (if you can believe that!). The overall length of the DC was just too much for us. Especially fitting in my garage which you could say was a huge factor.

NO NO NO ! The Dealer is lying to you All of that "exhaust tip, floor mats, etc." is added at the " port facility" -these are located around the country in different Regions. Ours is in the Kansas City area. I know this because my truck SAT there for 2 weeks while waiting for NOTHING To be added. This was exactly as I wanted it to be excedt it had to SET there with all of the other trucks waiting for add-ons.
Now I have heard some "regions" are very heavy-handed in specifying what "must" be added. I think this is BS. I know that the SE areas are in this group --and possibly others. You do not say where you are located?

No matter where you are buying from -- tell your dealer exactly how you want it -- If he wants to give you all that stuff you don't want for free -- so be it -- If not- WALK out of the door. You should be able to get a OR AC fairly reasonably, and add the extras YOU want and LIKE as you go along --that's what I did, and that's why I paid 30,575 for my 17 SR5.
That port- added "stuff are big money makers for Toyota

5 months!!?? This really sounds like they are trying to get you to buy what they have or have been allocated. That is ridiculous! Walk --out the door and ask another dealer!

Yeah, this happened to me, the part with adding stuff. They added the floor mats, after I told them what I wanted. I asked the salesman, who was the one who changed the allocation WHY he added them the day after I told him I don’t want them, he said he didn’t add them. The allocation came back that way.

Maybe the privately held exclusive wholesale distribution network in your area of the country demand this nonsense of adding extra stuff at the ports?
I do know for a fact that in the Midwest area --this IS NOT the policy. The dealers around here (Missouri) can order the truck the way YOU want it. The "scumbag dealer" may tell you otherwise, but that would be my signal to WALK OUT!
I would think any dealer could change an allocation sheet -- they did it for mine.
Who the hell is paying the money --YOU-- not them! All it means is they are lazy and do not want to do the paperwork.

Doesn’t matter, he’s keeping the floor mats.

TW is great for educating a buyer. I wish I had spent some time here before I purchased mine. I settled for a couple things that I have changed myself. Not a big deal. Got what I wanted I wanted though at a price I was happy with. Waiting a couple months is tough but you could, and hopefully will be enjoying your new truck for many years. Get what you really want!

Just received notice our truck (2019 OR AC Cement Technology/Premium) is allocated for production in San Antonio. We expressed our interests on October 18. Build is scheduled for December 4-7th with delivery to Western Massachusetts about 3 weeks later. Works for me!

My father-in-law ordered a RAV4 Adventure with heated steering wheel and it took 4 months to get it (it was a corporate employee purchase so even employees have to wait).

I have an update, my truck is in Ohio being unloaded from the train, then put on a truck. Will be here by the end of the week. It’s in Lordstown I think, which is like a 4 hour drive. And I have to wait another 5 days. Gotta love logistics, I’m sure it still has to have the port stuff done, need to wait for a full trailer, etc....
