It still looks like the most restrictive maximum gross weight is 3000 lbs or cargo weight of 2000 lbs (Mississippi).

After more research it looks like this is just a conservative number on Toyota’s part.

If this is indeed the correct interpretation of the operators manual, then perhaps it is to bring stopping distance closer that without a trailer because of drivers not properly increasing following distance/adjusting driving habits.

I sent an email to Toyota from their website .... I'll advise their response ....

Summary of my request to Toy.
    "
I Love my New 2020 Tacoma Access cab 4x4 SR I4 engine- but - I have found a concerning issue with towing capacity.

My user Manual https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM04025U/pdf/OM04025U.pdf indicates towing capacity as "3500 lbs". BUT there is a note on the page 187 that states " ... Unbraked TWR* 1000 lb. (450 kg) .... "

Which means that an un braked trailer of ANY size is limited to 1000 lbs trailer weight (TWR) with no brakes on trailer !!

My boat trailer is single axle (non braked ) for my 18' boat and easily exceeds 1000 Lbs (galvanized trailer alone is probably > 500 lbs). Therefore I cannot even tow my boat with this vehicle. Can you please advise if this is correct and I need to change vehicles?? Thank you "

I wonder if the word ‘Tundra’ will be anywhere in their response. :)

I'm more pissed that Toyota cutely hid the fact that for ANY Tacoma - max towing for a non braked trailer (aka, Boat, utility, etc.) is max of 1K Lbs -including trailer itself !! This will only allow un braked trailers similar to alu fishing boats and brush/leaf trailers ... Maybe.!

Not only a safety concern - but violation of vehicle specs can lead to many fines and lawsuits if an accident happens with a trailer.

Waiting to see what they say ....

I towed a 2 ton backhoe loader in a hilly area with no issue. I don't remember if there were brakes on the trailer (I don't think so) since it was like a year ago and it was a rental from Home Depot. It was a short 5 mins drive though. Didn't struggle at all.

Ok, Here is Toyota's answer ....... Go Figure ...

    Dear Mr. xxxxx ,

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We have confirmed the model code is TRN245L-CRTSKA and what you stated is correct, the vehicle can only tow up to 1,000 lbs. w/ an unbraked trailer, per pages 187+ in the Owner's Manual.

Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

    Sincerely,

    xxxxx

1,000 - 2,000 lbs. is not uncommon restriction for an unbraked trailer.

That’s an impressive differential. Tundra can handle 9,800 lbs trailer, but only 1000 unbraked.
