The thing that gets me is they said no problem to using a Honda Pilot, but not a taco...

A while back I borrowed the flatbed trailer from them to move my Miata, no problem with that... but the red flags come out with the dolly. I just didn’t want to drag a big ass trailer on a 1000 mile round trip.

Just tell them you are hauling a first gen Miata. 2100 lb's or so should get you an OK.

interesting... I towed a Toyota Corolla from Washington to Wisconsin behind my 2008 Sienna-with a dolly. Makes no sense that the Tacoma wouldn't be a better tow vehicle.

The biggest problem is the Uhaul car trailer is HEAVY ... right on their website it states its empty weight 2,210 lbs. Add any modern reasonable sized car on top of that and your damn close to the max tow rating and definitely heavier then your truck.

With that said I towed a Datsun 510 on a uhaul trailer behind my first gen no problem... but had to call 5 different Uhaul places to find one that would rent the trailer to me.

Car dollies suck anyway. You are better off with a flatbed.

For the tow dolly it looks like they are going by the weight of the vehicle you are towing. Even for a F250 super duty they don't recommend towing mid size cars with it. However, if you input something small like a MIata mentioned above they have no issue with it.

Advantage of a flatbed is that it will have trailer brakes, even though it will weigh more, it will be safer to tow.

Listen, I don’t know the details of your situation but this is what I’ve learned over the years and I’ve driven across country pulling a car a couple times now on the back of a box truck… The last time I needed to pull my 08’ dbl cab shrtbed 4x4 taco from South Texas to Ohio (1800 miles) UHAUL would not rent me a car hauler for the truck they wanted to put it on a dolly. That was NOT what I wanted/needed to do. Physically, I could not see any reason why the truck would not fit on the car hauler (which was their claim, ATT. c.2011). UHAUL also has a rule where they WILL NOT allow u to use any DIFFERENT BRAND truck w/their trailer- or visa-versa! I found a much cheaper deal on a much nicer/brand new 26’ truck, through Penske. I had to LIE to UHAUL in order to rent the car hauler:
    1. I had to tell them I was pulling a different vehicle from their acceptable list
    2. I had to convince them I was not using a competitors vehicle to pull their apps trailer. (No, really- that trailer got a flat tire during that trip). They would let me pull it empty w/my truck...But I don’t remember if they were gonna let me pull it loaded with my truck I think I had to tell him I was just taking it somewhere else and then hooking it to a larger truck- I don’t remember now.

The point of the story is… It worked perfectly fine! My taco went on UHAUL car hauler w/no problems it was tight (get a spotter) but it worked, I hooked that pos to the Penske & got to Ohio even though everything that could go wrong on a road trip just about did
The Penske trailers were much more expensive I think is why I went with the uhaul, availability may have played a factor as well.
Hopefully by now everyone knows this, but I’ll say it just in case-
Call around when your pricing things and always check different options on pick up/drop off locations that are close to your destination/starting point because they’ll have different prices depending on supply and demand for that particular area or town. If you’re going somewhere they don’t have a lot of trucks available to rent, they will give you a better deal if you’re taking one to an area where they need one. That happened to be the case with the Penske & I think I saved like $800 or something crazy on it.

edit: Since many of you seem to think it’s a weight issue with U-Haul… I must disclose that I did load the truck down with stuff as well it was pretty packed. When I finally got there & unloaded it enough to drive it off the trailer, I felt like I was sitting 3 inches lower than when I loaded it. Measurements proved differently, lol but I would’ve swore it was dropped.
In the end I really don’t think the wait is an issue if it’s empty. If anything, the weight ‘could’ have hurt the situation and caused the premature flat tire...

    U-Haul......nope.....not happening

Thanks, I'll pay a little extra. Trucks in good order, everything works. Ride is reasonable, fuel mileage.....6-8 mpg (not bad), good stowable ramps.

The only U-Haul I rented was governed at 55 mph without cruise control. There was a brick laying in the cab. I kept wondering about the oddity of the brick.....after about 100 miles....the light dawned. The brick was the cruise control, just plop it on the throttle pedal. Damn truck would fall to 50 mph uphill, then speed to 56 mph downhill, highway speed limits were posted 65-70 mph. That was a long long trip without A/C and brick cruise, but it did have AM radio. :annoyed: Never again will I rent U-Haul.

IMG_20180726_114418429.jpg I've towed this exact accord on both the tow dolly and car hauler from uhaul. If I could offer and advice I'd say get the car hauler if possible. The extra 10 dollars was worth being able to panic stop in a reasonable distance. Not sure what year civic you were hauling. But if it runs. Put it on the car hauler

Also. Sometimes uhaul system acts funny with tacomas. If you select regular tacoma it won't allow anything. Even if you select 4x4. But select prerunner and it allows anything

    Lol that’s funny
I do remember them having governors...but I think it was just for certain sizes, that was many many yrs ago...could be different now
