We can't even stop planes and trains from smashing into each other. This self driving car nonsense will be the cats meow for lawyers and gravediggers.

It's only inevitable. People said the same about throttle by wire and there are still naysayers. Do I loathe the idea of a self driving car? Yes, yes I do simply because I love driving and I feel I'm good at it. There are those out there that would benefit from it but as a whole, the human element with all the distractions is less capable than a advanced (yes advanced when we get there) system. Subaru's eyesight system is pretty legit and it save my buddy from a multi car pile up. That system see's cars ahead and was able to brake before he reacted. It accounts for tire pressure, road conditions (suspension sensors) and weather. He went to step on the brakes and they were already applied by the eyesight system.

If your throttle by wire don't work the car don't drive. I can't tell you how many cars I've hopped in with ABS, traction control, tire lights, and stability control on. It's safe to say that a good number of people will let autonomous aids fall into disrepair also.

In that article it talks about the self driving car nonsense doing away with private ownership of vehicles. What happens when say there is a football game or other large event going on that everyone wants to go to at the same time?

Yes inevitable it seems- I never connected the dots about car "ownership" going away though. I also do not covet a self driving car, but thinking most people will not own cars at all- being transported by autonomous vehicles foregoing the expense and labor of owning/maintaining their own. All that valuable property currently devoted to parking lots could be put to such better use.....
As I drive, I see people who are distracted (cell phone) drivers and realize that there are many who would gladly forego the brain bandwidth required to actually drive so they can devote more time doing something they like.
I always thought that self driving cars would end up limiting freedom of movement- kinda like the right to privacy that is going away without too much fanfare....

There are also a lot of nasty people out there, can you imagine people peeing, pooping, vomiting in them, I certainly would not want to be the next person getting in one after that. They could also do drugs and leave used needles behind, have bedbugs, etc...
