IMO, additives are like interval changes of all fluids: Preventative. I would not rely on them as a fix. I will never know if additives work. Not my field of expertise.

    Work in progress...
Back before ECU's and O2 sensors, and STP stickers were still in style, some folks would run a little diesel, 16oz to a tank, after changing the oil.

Just my opinion but if you only run E10 fuels theres no need for additives. The ethanol, plus the detergents in the gas will keep your fuel system spotless. I only use top tier gas.

there are videos on youtube explaining all these cleaners. chrisfix had one and then project farm did it as well. they concluded that it isnt worth it. i think with chris fix it cleaned 1 out of 6 cylinders......but barely.

like other people said, just use good gas, drive your car, and be happy.

A $20 bottle of fuel cleaner isn’t going to much more than the detergents already in Top Tier fuels. It will do a good job of removing cash from peoples wallets however .
BG makes a ‘dynamic engine service restoration kit’ that requires a few chem flushes then running engine at 3k for 20 min, and then another oil change . Most dealers charge @$700 for that service and it actually works.

BG prohibits sales of this product to end users, but it can be found on both Amazon and Ebay for under $400.

some people still add a splash of 2-stroke oil to their gas as an upper cylinder lubricant

Any of the major companies like BP, mobil, shell, sunoco, ect. are top tier. Its those odd ball discount no name gas stations that aren't.

I got 231K miles out of my '06 Tundra running regular gas without additives and on the original plugs. It's probably still running around somewhere.

Same for my 01 4.7 tundra...its still running fine with its new owner at 300k+miles. I only did seafoam once in awhile when we had mtbe in our gas. It would leave the throttle body insides with a gooy black residue screwing up the idle speed. Spray some seafoam in there with a rag, plus add a can in the tank and your good to go. Once we switched over to 10% ethanol fuels i never needed it again.

I use Seafoam occasionally. I can definitely sense the difference. Especially in my motorcycles.

Maybe my customer should have added some of that magic in a bottle stuff to his Ecoboost motor?

I use Seafoam in power equipment engines because ethanol screws up the fuel line, floats, and needle valves. I've never used it in my trucks.

I don't think it would have helped..... Did it get hot and burn the oil on the piston eventually causing blow by or was it caused by blow by?

or did someone just dump oil down the intake?

I just use top tier gasoline, like the manual recommends.

I know all too well that those types of additives in todays modern engine is nothing but snake oil ...
    1950-snake-oil-is-wonderful-stuff-500x722.jpg

To answer your question though, I'm certain blow by from high idle times. Piston 1 and 3 were normal. This was from a City Utility Truck that had 70k on the OD so you can imagine the idle times. So far this is the only 3.5L Ecoboost that I've had this issue with.

Usually I'll see this with the 3.5L's..

On a Raptor that I'm currently in the middle of..

Most likely a mixture of direct injection only, high cylinder pressure and positive crankcase pressure blow by
