My lowers are just inside the frame maybe 2-4 inches. Don’t remember. Essentially made a mount that sets them just inboard the size of the bracket angled towards the axle mount. The upper is welded right to the frame and I don’t rub my lowers.

I also set the axle side lowers by turning the tire to full lock and no bind on the u joints and set the mount about a 1/4 in farther in that way so the tire doesn’t rub and I get all my steering.

Most pitman arms are forged not cast and easily weldable. A flat arm will help but shorter throw takes some steering away. Just as the farther from the kingoin/ball joint the drag link is, the less steering you have. I learned all this the hard way.

me personally. Get the steering firgured out. Tac the lowers and uppers. Find full bump and tac the shocks and bumps then spend a day or a few cycling. You’ll be surprised how many times you end up cutting stuff and moving things.

I need a coupling for the steering box but I was able to just find center and run it back and forth to find the max w the stock arm. It’s way less than the hub swings so I’m looking at like 4.5-5.5 inches inside frame on lowers.

I wanted to use a tj box like you but the alt relocation on LS makes it out of the question.

the arm I’m getting is only 1/4 shorter I believe unless I make one to come right by trac mount. Still figuring all this shit out. It’s sucks when you know you are gonna fuck up too.

Got the high steer basically done on the pass side so I can at least tac the tie rod in tomorrow to firm things up.

Don’t let the screw ups get to you. I made 9 axle side trac bar brackets and probably a dozen upper and lower shock mounts before I found what I liked. Probably took me 10 days of missing with the shocks and bumps before I was happy. It’s all a give or take

Quoted for truth! It's all the little screw ups that take forever on builds like this that drive everyone nuts, it's part of the game.

If you do need custom pitman arms, these guys are awesome http://www.partsmike.com/. They built my Ford box to fj80 flat pitman arm and have been around since forever.

List of steering shit i had no clue I needed

-11/16” 36 spline steering u joints. You need 2 or you are gonna be fabbing firewall shit. (They are sold as 3/4 but fit the steering box.

-stupid TG firewall plate. TG has us by the balls!

-tubing to extend steering box rod.

    - and the big ticket item! You see other builds and all you see is links and 40’s. Damn tunnel vision. Every single sas build I have ever seen has the frame being made, then remade to fit the damn steering gear! I did the same damn shit! Like I was gonna be special. For any future fuckups like me! Don’t 45 the driver side down to go under core! Double stack 2x3 or step up to 2x4 4-5 inches before core. Plate it later. That steering gear is gonna set up shop there and fuck your life.

Words of advice- Don’t sas a Toyota unless you are ready for battle. It’s like those bad relationships you hear about involving physical, emotional and financial abuse.

Spend the money, get the TG firewall plate. But instead of using their steering u joints, spend a few extra $$ and get the Burgeson (sp?) Joints instead. Much better quality, and less play. Had the TG ones last about 2ish years but had play, did the tack the u joint cups, still wasn't the greatest. Swapped out to the Burgesons, which contributed to less steering play and better quality joint.

Should be some TTORA and Pirate threads for part numbers. Can be easily ordered through Jegs/Summit.

Yeah, im getting the plate for sure! Don't have time for that sheetmetal fab at all.

I got some Amazon joints cause I needed them asap and I had no clue what was good or not. Im sure they will break. I almost bought some of those from jegs actually. Prob should have. Ill remember that for when these fail. Thanks for the info!

FWIW I got all my borgenson shit off Amazon, the issue with their steering shafts is they are square and the firewall plate hole is setup for a round shaft. You can coble some shit together out of older Toyota truck steering shaft parts. I can't remember if I still have any laying around that I didn't use, if I do I'll snap some pics Incase you can use them.

Fwiw my steering wall "plate" is made out of a sheet of rubber and aluminum foil HVAC tape. I used the FROR one (do not buy, POS) and I couldn't get it to work, so I threw it out.

i got my joints and they are true 3/4 and too big. Gonna weld one to steering wheel side but I have to use the parts on shaft to make another. I can’t get the damn you joints out clean. Have you ever done this?? Have one practice joint then I have to do it right on other side.

Yep! I got 2 out and was able to salvage 4 caps but when I repressed them the joint was super stiff. The caps can’t handle the press and cave I think. And I can’t find them local.

I almost bought those, but couldn't find the 'right fit'. I have an odd foot :(

    Plus I'm a big sucker for pull-ons!

I mean, let's be honest, I tied these once, and now they're pull ons.
