Glad you figured this out so I don’t have to whenever an LM7 finds its way into my truck :)

Dont buy a complete unless it’s an LS style motor w the good intake (Ls1,2 or 6) and -1 or -2 spacing or you will literally use nothing but the alternator and compressor bracket. May seem like more money but if you get one from a car like a cts, Camaro or corvette you prob won’t have to change shit. Just put in.

Don’t get a 4l80e trans either. If you do, you have to spend like $500 more for a harness upgrade. My harness and pro dash cost the same as my atlas 2.

It was crazy we were doing air sampling at a previous job and they did a sample plasma cutting stainless, and it was like 100x the max allowable limit for hex chrome. I still had mechanics arguing with me about why can't they do that... :homer:

Honestly I think mine will end up being an L96 and 6L90 out of the cargo van when I decide to replace it at work. GM is finally going to end Express and Savanna production in 2024 so I’ll have to get some new ones to keep them around as long as possible soon!

Nice. Other than the intake and WP issue, the LS fits pretty easy in a 1st gen. The trans hitting firewall was prob the biggest issue.

Idk why the fuck this was so hard but by far the hardest weld job I have done on this truck. Left hand lead left, right, right hand lead both, up, down. Looks like 4 different people welded it. I just can’t believe how hard this was. I fucking hate steering boxes!

@slander 1st and last steering box period! No mas!

LOL!!! look in my build thread where I had to build a fucking nutsert because my steering box bolt went right where the goddamn motor mount is located! Oh then where I had to notch the frame because my stupid ass didn't account for the castle nut with my flat pitman arm, then I had to stack more square tube ontop of that because that operation was a complete shit show, I didn't trust my notch job and didn't want the front of my truck to fall off.

People who say the fabrication is the favorite part of this hobby are either liars, nuts, or both!!

Oh I hope you sleeved those bolt holes or it's going to rip off on the trail:luvya:

If anyone is interested I went and talked to my neighbor about his braking setup. I was correct, it is an Astro Van brake booster. He bought one from a junkyard for like $20 and used it as a core to get a new one from Autozone. He has not had a single issue with it and has no fear cruising down the freeway on 4D's. I snapped some pics and got some measurements as well (ignore the parts everywhere, he's doing a motor swap):
    20220709_200620.jpg
    20220709_200549.jpg

There is a lot going on in this pic but in essence the hydro brake booster is right up against the firewall followed by the master cylinder and then a PSC reservoir (which can be mounted anywhere). He runs everything off the factory steering pump which is drilled out for more flown but remains at the factory pressures.

The entire system (minus the PSC reservoir) measures ~ 14.5" Length, 6" width, 5.5" height. It's pretty long but also pretty narrow. Bolt pattern of the hydro brake booster is 3.5" height x 4" width.

He also gave me the PSC high pressure line routing for hydro braking and full hydro steering. He is running hydro assist (like I believe we both will) so he just replaced the Orbital Valve with a steering box and the Steering Cylinder with a hydro assist ram.
    20220710_114014.jpg

Hopefully that helps someone looking in to doing hydro braking!

Yeah, the are bullshit. The way to do it is build it into a weld in piece and you just weld it in frame. I would have done that if I did it again, which I won’t! I’ll check out yours! Lol. Prob harder w a factory frame.

I’m still dealing w the headache of this “steering” requirement! As seen in pic.

    AC290ED0-B68E-48DC-AA5C-5D56E61075A1.jpg
Oh yeah, they are sleeved. I’m slightly concerned about water getting in but I’ll prob just loosen up the bolts once in a while and blow air through sleeves cause I cant weld them from outside unless I want to dremel them for like 5 hours. Amazing how much of a bitch it is and nobody really says shit about it.

I will def be looking this reply over tonight in detail but wanted to say thanks.

I never measured this but thought it may be a useful reference. From top of fender rail to center of hub where I can put coil on and off is about 44 1/4”. This is where straps will limit. Panhard is a little angled but the links are money.

2 5/8” swing pass to driver side at full droop.

The narrow profile it has is the big thing. Plus its not that wide at all compared to a booster. I found one for $50 but have to drive like 40 min for it so gonna at least compare apples to peaches and see which is smaller. Thanks for all the good info btw!!

Doing a full rebuild on this steering gear. Tap info as well.

    IMG_4957.HEIC.jpg

Drilled into the small port and just dremeled it smooth. Then tapped.
    IMG_4952.HEIC.jpg

The one on the toyoda lettering can be done anywhere you want really as long as its in one of the recesses so main shaft doesnt hit. But, the whole side is an option (on the cast part not the machinded part) but you cant run the fitting past the inside wall much. (highlighted in yellow is where makes most sense to me)

    IMG_4953.jpg
    IMG_4954.jpg

Wire brushed, emory clothed all the journals, filed any burs at the mating surfaces and she is like new.

Ordered this kit and it looks like all the seals I need.

GATES 348431 (1991 and up) If your gear has the 10mm allen head centering valve it is the same. If not, its the 1991 and older and you need the other gates kit. Rock auto has all the part numbers.

Learned everything I know from this guy. I find that obscure car info is always the most reliable from some guy does shit in the backyard with chickens running around.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjbJ6479BKo

This is a more complete rebuild

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzwG1fLVkI

UPDATE- gates kit was not entirely complete and the Teflon rings were questionable. Next time I’m prob gonna price Toyota orings.

Also, don’t do this rebuild unless you enjoy building furniture and other annoying things like that. It kinda sucked and pissed me off.

    Bang bang today!

Did a little Toyota bolt pattern conversion. Fuck drilling the firewall. Also, it unbolts so no pulling past the threads before tipping up.

My nice coil pack mounts don't fit anymore but whats new. Moved those things around like 5 times. Just gonna cnc a custom one.

    @ForestRunnerFrank99 thanks

Idk. I called 5 junk yards and told them ill take any 2500 chevy hydrobooster they had. The 5th one had this one. I think it is out of an express van. It worked out good cause I accidentally bought a hydroboost ps pump so i don't even have to make changes to that.

Working on the exhaust. Super tedious. Prob 10% done if that. Had to redo most of it but it is the way I like it now so I can connect to other side.
