na. Better to take cover off to drain anyway. You can get all the shit out. The first cycle is gonna suck after like 100 miles but after it won’t be done often. This isn’t gonna be a true daily driver

That’s a 23 spline forward shift from an 86 turbo.

Its so tough! I got a bunch of over drip on the pinion housing and had to use the hard cup wire wheel to get it off and it didn't just go right through it. The normal one on the drill had no chance. I also cleaned that housing with brake parts cleaner and it didn't even haze it. Normal paint comes right off with that stuff.

Why did you do just the housing and not the tubes? Are you doing those later after you weld stuff to it?

Started the pinion preload today. Took it apart like 6-7 times because I was rushing and not adding up the shims. Ended up being exactly within a thousanth of the original crush sleeve. Just have to dial it in but not too bad.

I am not 100% confident in the perch location and pinion angle until I get the exact ride height and I need to do the shock mounts and most likely 2 brake line guides. Im just gonna pull it out to weld on my rack and paint the tubes when Im done.

Got gears done. The preload took forever to get 30 inch pounds but the backlash was super smooth thankfully and got 8 out of it. Got all the brake crap pressed too. Hubs and bearing manana.

update- idk wtf I was smoking when I bought and installed dust shields. Thought about it today and realized how stupid it was. Now I have to press them off. These mistakes are costing so much time.

I kinda fucked up and redid the paint like 3 times to double check everything and it kept coming in duller and duller. I forgot to take a pic of the first drive coast. I have the last pics but you cant see very well. Ill prob drain the oil I have in there to test the seal and redo it in the next few days so I can get some better feedback.

Looks good, carb cleaner is good for pulling that paint off for running another pattern check. Drive and coast look good, dead smack in the center.

Yeah, the coast is perfect. The drive was pretty close to center but fanned out a little and stopped still kind of center. I got rid of all the paint. Ill mark it again and make sure its good. I ran outta time today. Had to press all those stupid dust guards on and bent and had to straighten the caliper brackets. If I was to do it again, I would buy a $1000 shipped clean ass 14 bolt. I have like 60 hrs or more in this axle. Every piece I refurbished painted and reused other than the dust guards, calipers, rotors, and ring gear bolts.

That's why it's always a good idea to buy new. If you take 60hrs and multiply that by your standard $75 an hour rate (typically $95 to $150) that's already $4500. :annoyed::ballchain:

Include locker, master bearing kit, ring and pinion, and it's not too far from buying a brand new bare 3.5" OD 3/8" wall fully assembled unit with the correct wms

Yeah, ive done the math. Its depressing. Prob should have started fresh with a blank housing. I even had to buy a new carrier so nothing was really of any value at all. Still have to buy a $400 brake kit. FML. Thankfully I got that super duty front axle for 400 and its really clean. Gonna be able to use every part on it.

I have to get adaptors for the rear to match the 8x170 so the wms will be within an inch of the front.

Im starting to question the 4wu kit. I almost want to hack off all the shit on the ford and just get his brackets. You think I should just wait for this mythical perfect package?

Nothing wrong with the SD axle. Use whatever you felt is right for your built. Custom bracket or someone else's kit. 4WU have a lot of ingenuity and geometry built into it.

Im keeping the SD regardless. There are just 2 ways to do it. Strip and link it custom or use his kit. Im pretty much waiting to spend a shit ton of money on the kit just to get the geometry. Im basically gonna tack all his stuff on and then hack the frame off and raise it so idk what will actually work other than the lowers. He is talking about a truss which I refuse to use. I told him why I didn't want a truss and he said he agreed but said everyone wants one cause they look cool. So, idk. Stupid situation but his stuff is so right.

Yep. It comes down to what you want. That's one reason I stuck with Toyota :anonymous:. Yes, I agree, 1t with 35s axles are hd and can take up abuse but they're heavy. For what I use them for, the 9.5 with 80 ball and HF knuckles is plenty strong. Hell, my 83 with a 22ret, stock IFS width rear and front with IFS hubs and stock internals didnt break on 38. I'm not bouncing off rock or doing anything stupid with it. Do stupid things, win stupid prizes.
