Going to rent a 6'x12' and load it up with a sofa, heavy table, heavy mattress and a couple of other things. Maybe 1000lbs.

I have a v6 short bed, towing package.

You guys think I will have any issues going across country? I have no other towing mods. The 6'x12' has some sort of hydraulic brake assist.

Anything else to consider before the trip?

    Thanks

Absolutely no concerns. Just make sure you load it right. Too much tongue weight and it'll steer poorly and sag the truck, too much weight in the rear of the trailer and it'll lift the rear of the truck and cause the truck and trailer to sway and potentially cause you to lose control. Just make sure your fluids in the truck are good, brakes are okay and you're tires are in good shape as well as the spare.

The uhaul trailers use a braking system that runs to the tongue of the trailer. When you brake, there is a valve in the tongue that presses against the ball on the tongue in your hitch. This pushes fluid in the lines of the trailer to the drum brakes on the trailer. Their trailers use a 1-7/8" or 2" ball and a 4 pole flat plug for lights, use a 2" on that trailer size. Also, make sure the trailer is level when hooked to the truck.

You should be fine. I had a 6x12 trailer loaded with mowers when I had my landscaping company. Used to tow it with my '99 with the 3.4 v6. Never had an issue and did cover quite a bit of highway miles between clients. You should be fine.

Just towed my '98 from Ca - Fl, used a U-haul tow dolly behind my 2015.
No problems, just give yourself more following distance, braking response will take a little longer;)

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated. I just went and picked up the ball and 4 flat to 7 pin adapter. Will make sure it is balanced and he trailer is level.

    Thanks again.

I hauled their 6x12 from New Orleans to Tulsa, OK with no problems and it was packed full with some of our house hold goods.

Thanks for the replies. Should I keep it in 4th gear the entire trip?

    Thanks

Towed one of those from central Oklahoma down to southeast Georgia in the middle of summer. Truck drove like a champ. And I'm pretty sure I had the trailer near max weight limitations. I'll see if I can find a pic.

yeah keep it in D. That will be a very light load you are towing. No need to worry about keeping it in 4th. I used to keep it in 4th with my 5k lb trailer. In this case it won't be necessary. Save some gas money.

Question for the stock height, Sport, towing package owners: Which drop did you use on the hitch?

Truck at the time had no lift. I used the regular 2" drop.

I don't want to start a 4th VS 5th towing debate, but if you're going cross country in OD, You're going to get the tranny hot eventually....

At least drop it into 4th going up a grade. I have a ScannGauge, and can say for sure, it doesn't take much of a load on much of a grade to get the trans hot in OD.

I don't want to seem argumentative, but I don't want you to cook something either.

This is something I happened to do while on my excursion. I'd drop her down into fourth. :)

You cooked the tranny with a 1000-2000 lb trailer??

Do you have the towing package upgrades or just a receiver?

I never said I cooked my tranny. I said I dropped it down into fourth gear...for large hills. Other than that, the truck drove just fine in OD. I just didn't drive it like I stole it.

And I'd say the trailer, loaded to the point the door would barely close, was a lot higher than 2000lbs.
