Well, if I move to San Diego here in the next year, looks like I found a good camping spot! :D

Can you swim in that water, or will you just get devoured?

    Wow. Yeah.

I was in San Diego in the Padres press box last year when the one hit in June(?) and stopped the game for a minute.

I had never been in one that rolled like that. After everything calmed down, the PA guy got on the mic and said "everyone please remain calm." The whole stadium just laughed, like "we do this all the time, dipshit."

Of course... it has one of the world's biggest tides (16-20 foot), so you usually swim around high tide, otherwise it is about a half mile walk to get your feet wet at low tide!

We prefer the summer when the sea water is close to 85ºF or more! We spend as much time in the water as we can!

Low tide (first photo from high tide line):

Looking back towards the beach from out on the low tide sand bars (see my silver Tacoma?):

During a full or new moon, the tides are the biggest. High tides comes just after noon and midnight and low tide about sunrise and sunset. During the quarter moon phases those are reversed and the tides are much less severe.

Pretty cool that all that water moves in and out 4 times a day... think of the energy! AS you go south in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) the tides become less and less severe, but the volume that moves north and south in the 700 mile long gulf is perhaps why it is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world with over 800 varieties of fish and whales.

Compare and contrast that with the Puget Sound where if you're not careful, your boat ends up high and dry at low tide :D Some pretty big tides in the Sound.

I don't get to camp as much as I would like, but I usually buy REI gear. For 2 reasons: 1) Dividens 2) Unquestioned return policy.

I was camping at the Bonneville Salt Flats for Speed Week. You can't hammer in steaks, so I drilled in bolts. The wind and rain was so bad that over 2 dozen tents we damaged and destroyed in my camp ground area. My tent stayed in tact....

... Even after the rain softened the ground enough to release the bolts and sent my tent, fully loaded, over 200 feet into the canal. We used tie down to fish it out. The poles were bent from the recovery and a few holes had been punched in the mesh by a cot inside.

I cleaned it up, took it back to REI and they ordered me my model (not the current one) and seeing it was now a reduced price, gave me a store credit.

I will take bigger, longer bolts next time.

Be safe Dave! That's not the sort of 'camping' we want to here about.

Wow. Good thing you weren't in the tent at the time!
I'm an REI fan too - all of my big $$$ items are from there. its nice that some companies take care of their customers no questions asked - I don't abuse that either. If I take an item back its because of something being seriously wrong.
