Awesome! Welcome to the crowd! You will love it! I would buy a good stove and water purifier other than a tent. Take a look at what some of have and watch for reviews. I just posted some of my new products and reviewed them after having used them a few times. That will give you a good idea.

Try not to become a gear whore like David and I... It gets expensive!!!!

I think this has been discussed a little bit before, but I was wondering do y'all ever camp solo? If so, how often, and what's your experience like?

I have several times but only out of necessity, when I can't find anyone to go with me. I've also been over various types of terrain alone - canoeing down a river, kayaking in the gulf (dumb idea, good story though), backpacking a few times, mtn biking, and car camping once. I've never done more than a one nighter though, and there's usually a period of a few hours or so where I suffer from extreme lonelyness, sometimes only a few hours into the trip. I usually just play my harmonica or read, and I'm back to normal. It gets less with each time I go. Also, I used to get freaked out, but that's mostly because I usually don't sleep in a tent. That has pretty much gone away though; not sure why, seeing as I've had small mammals come sniff around me on two occasions

I almost went tonight, but it would've been car camping in a campground. That's hardly camping to me, and I figured I'd get bored. So, I just went on a little hike with the pup. Almost got lost because the trail didn't follow the markers:confused:

I do not backpack by myself. There is too much working against me that if I get hurt, I am screwed. It isn't worth it to me. Kayaking, I have gone by myself a few time, again, dont make it a habit. I mountain biked numerous times alone though. Had my fair share of nasty injuries too

Bottom line is, I highly HIGHLY recommend you take a partner

Agreed. Even if you hike you should do it with someone. If not tell someone where the hell your going. IE. 127 hours.

I will car camp by myself for days. I don't usually have a problem with it--sometimes even run a 4x4 trail by myself. I've gone on a couple of solo backpack trips too. There's always risk whether you go with others or by yourself.

When I go by myself, I usually don't try anything too crazy and almost always go where there are other people. I find I enjoy the solo trips--not as much as those with friends.

You shouldn't avoid solo trips but definitely weigh the risks and benefit before you go. And definitely let people know when you're leaving and when you expect to be back.

bingo! Always let someone know where you will be and times you expect to leave. I make it a habit of letting a few friends know, my parents, and when backpacking, I let the rangers know where/when and what car I am driving.

I do a lot of trips solo mainly because no one can keep up with my schedule when I'm out - I camp and hike to do photography and the best pictures are taken at sunrise and sunset so I'm up early and out late. Sometimes with a nap inbetween. I always let someone know where I am and I check in whenever I'm in cell range. I also usually camp and hike where there is a lot of other people and I don't stray off of the hiking trails.

Seriously reconsidering the camping in campgrounds though...the last trip I was in a camp ground and was the only tenter. Every single camp had trash bags, BBQ's, etc left out. Maybe they don't care about keeping a clean camp since they are in a hard sided trailer but it pissed me off and made me very uncomfortable - this was in bear country after all. Sometimes I think I would be better off on my own, away from the slobs.

Then there's the generators. Nothing like a face full of smoke as you're trying to cook your own meal or enjoy the evening at the campfire.

...and the kids on the 4wheelers going 'round and 'round and 'round...:annoyed: I like the smell and sound of a crackling campfire, not the noise and exhaust from ATV's!

Just choose your campground wisely...some are more lax than others when it comes to cleanliness and noise. If there were generators or people being noisy, I wouldn't want to camp there either! Sounds like backpacking is the way to go.

Yes, some are more strict about it. In yellowstone they patrol the camps pretty regularly and if they find a cooler left behind they are most likely to confiscate it. If you're lucky you'll get it back along with a warning, or you'll be asked to pack up and leave. And those camps have designated areas for tenters only so there are no generators, etc. and every site has its own steel, bear proof storage box.
