X2, I've never tried Mtn House, or any other brand like it. I just can justify paying that price for a camping meal. There's all kinds of cheap, healthier choices in the grocery store.

IE: They now sell spaghetti sauce in bags now! Zip lock some noodles, add some packaged Chicken Breast and you have a gourmet meal! YUM! Also, with some tortillas, cheese wrapped in wax, pepperoni, and you can make pizza! With tortillas, Chicken, and cheese you could make a burrito/taco.

I usually string my meals together like this to save weight, and to have multiple great meals!

Love camping meals! so much room to be creative! :D

    I'm with you.

There's tons of boil-in-a-bag foods you can get from the grocery store that cost less, take up less space and create less waste and cleanup than the dehydrated backpacking food.

The one advantage I can see about brands like Mountain House is that they tend to pack more calories per ounce than items I can grab from the store at similar weight. I only find that necessary for longer treks, though. And if I'm concerned about calorie intake over a long period, I usually just go for an MRE. Bastards are heavy, but they sure pack a wallop in human fuel.

I may have to go check out the grocery store for those boil-in-a-bag foods and get a little more creative. For the most part, I use the MH. It is frustrating though because most of their meals are 2 person deals, and when you're dealing with a bunch of Boy Scouts and none of them want to eat the same thing...

No one will ever be able to take away my Mountain House Granola and Blueberries breakfast though. 500 Calories of glorious yum yum.

*shrug* for a 2-4 day trip, I usually have one mountain house mid-way through, and jerky, oatmeal, instant mashed potatoes, and trail mix/gorp.

Ooh...Boy Scouts is a whole other enchilada. When I went on weeklong backpacking trips in Scouts, Mountain House, et al, was the best way to go.

Just for ease of meal preparation. Everyone got one packet of the same thing per night and we just dumped it all in a big pot and mixed it up there. Less hassle. Of course, we were under the guidelines of "eat what we're making or don't eat." It's amazing how fast kids' pickiness dissolves after 2 days on the trail with nothing but gorp.

For a standard 7-day backpacking trip, we had a different packet of food per dinner and breakfast (each kid carried the same number of packets so the weight distributed evenly). Lunch was usually something lighter like sausage or cheese and crackers. We also got an MRE each and some dehydrated fruit to supplement us along the trail.

:facepalm:meant to hit the 11 key. lol that is a pretty good deal for a -20 bag. You are going to be really limited to something that can go that low without going to a mummy. How cold are we talking? If it gets below the single digits, I would do that bag, and a nice down blanket or something over that. Will you have access to electric?

    Hell yeah frisbee!

That's what I use for a plate. It's as light as most backpacking plates, and you can throw it around if you need entertainment. Plus, it's deep-walled enough to hold stews and some soups if my mug is being utilized elsewhere.

    My mess kit consists of:

    - Jetboil PCS
    - Frisbee
    - Stainless camp mug (soon to upgrade to something I can stick in a fire, like
    a single-wall titanium or something)
    - An old-ass aluminum spoon (also to be upgraded to titanium)
    - Gerber multi-plier or dive knife (whatever's closest)

One of the first lessons I ever learned about eating in the field is "if you can eat it with a fork, you can eat it with a spoon." Bam! 1oz gone.
